Tottenham head coach Antonio Conte says surgery to remove his gallbladder has “gone well” as he starts a spell of recovery, which will almost see him miss Sunday’s clash with Manchester City.

Spurs announced on Wednesday morning the 53-year-old Italian had recently been taken ill with “severe abdominal pain”, which was diagnosed as cholecystitis and would need an operation.

The procedure has now taken place, and Conte is set for a period away from work to recuperate.

“Thank you for your lovely messages, my surgery has gone well and I’m already feeling better,” a post on Conte’s Instagram story feed read.

“Now’s time to recover, I can’t wait to get back on the field with the team.”

Conte’s assistant Cristian Stellini is expected to step in when Spurs host Manchester City on Sunday.

Tottenham also face Premier League matches against Leicester, West Ham and Chelsea this month, as well as a trip to the San Siro for the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against AC Milan on February 14.

Porro poised for Tottenham debut

Sunday’s clash with City could see a debut for deadline signing Pedro Porro.

With Matt Doherty offloaded and Djed Spence now out on loan, Porro will be first-choice ahead of Emerson Royal for the right wing-back role.

However, whether he starts against City very much depends on how he fares in training this week.

Porro has been speaking to the media about this move and admits he was thrilled to get the move over the line.

He told the official Spurs Twitter page: “I feel great about the move. I really wanted to come here. It’s a unique opportunity for me and I hope everything goes well.

“I can bring a lot of character and personality to this team.

“Above all, my desire and will to win. I’ve also managed to watch quite a few league games this season, I’ve been following our games too, and in this case, I can say that now!

“So, yes, I can provide character, desire, and a great attitude.”

If Porro does face City on Sunday he will come up against a club where he spent three years without making a single appearance.
