Antonio Conte told he ‘can’t complain’ at Tottenham after £170m transfer spree

Jamie Redknapp insists Antonio Conte “can’t complain” at Tottenham after spending over £170m since May.

The Italian saw his side easily beaten by bitter rivals Arsenal at home on Sunday, underling a dramatic turnaround in fortunes since their meeting eight months ago.

Spurs pipped the Gunners to the final Champions League spot last season, thanks in large part to a 3-0 win over Mikel Arteta’s side at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium towards the end of the campaign.

Still, Conte’s side now look far off approaching anything like the kind of form that took them back to Europe’s premier club competition.

The former Inter Milan and Chelsea coach has insisted he needs time to mould Tottenham into genuine title challengers, calling for more transfer windows in which to alter the squad even amid doubts about his long-term future.

Redknapp, however, believes Conte has already been backed.

An analysis of both Tottenham and Arsenal’s spending since that day in May shows the former having invested £172m in comparison to the latter’s £121.5m.

While there are caveats on either side given the money spent on turning Cristian Romero’s loan move into a permanent move at Spurs and William Saliba’s signing having been paid for years ago by Arsenal, Redknapp insists it leaves Conte with little complaint.

“He can’t really complain considering how much money he’s spent,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.

“The gulf in class and the style of football that Arsenal are playing is what will really compound it for Spurs fans.

“It’s what will really incense them because they’re not looking at a team with much direction.”
