Antonio Rudiger has confirmed his departure from Chelsea in a heartfelt message to fans, following a period of his career that “meant everything”.

Rudiger has enjoyed a good period of his career with Chelsea. The German has been one of their most crucial players of late, and has racked up 202 appearances since his £31.5million move from Roma in 2017. Rudiger slotted into the Chelsea defence with ease, playing a total of 60 league games in his first two seasons.

He has enjoyed a good deal of success with the Blues, winning the FA Cup, Champions League, Europa League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup.

At 29 years of age, it has seemed that Rudiger may move on to pastures new for a while, amid interest from elsewhere – especially considering his contract runs out at the end of the season.

There have been talks of a move to European powerhouses Real Madrid for a while, which has apparently already been confirmed. A move to the Spaniards represents an exciting new adventure in a new league, despite Chelsea’s status, also of one of Europe’s elite.

Rudiger himself has now confirmed he will be stepping out of the door at Chelsea at the end of the season. He has delivered a heartfelt message on his time at the club, announcing his departure.

“I don’t like goodbyes. But I will try to make this one special, from the heart,” he said via The Players’ Tribune.

“I leave this club with a heavy heart. It has meant everything to me.”

The centre-back also acknowledged his joy in playing for Chelsea despite the situation behind the scenes at the club.

“Even this season, with all the complications, has been enjoyable. Football is football. We are blessed to play a game for a living that we would play for free anyway,” he said.

Rudiger admitted that the situation regarding his contract made it hard for him to be able to prolong his stay with the Blues.

“Unfortunately, my contract negotiations had already started to get difficult last fall. Business is business, but when you don’t hear any news from the club from August to January, the situation becomes complicated,” he said.

“After the first offer, there was a long gap of just nothing. We’re not robots, you know? You cannot wait for months with so much uncertainty about your future.

“Obviously, no one saw the sanctions coming, but in the end, other big clubs were showing interest, and I had to make a decision.”

Despite Rudiger confirming his departure, he declared his love for the side where he has spent the last five seasons.

“Chelsea will always be in my heart. London will always be my home,” he added.

“I have hundreds of memories that will stay with me forever.”

The message from Rudiger seems fitting, following the successful period he has enjoyed at the club. Chelsea fans will no doubt retain the respect they have had for the star during his time at the club.
