The chances of Antony moving to Man Utd have swelled after a trio of positive updates emerged, including two from Ajax.

The Red Devils remain on the hunt for a versatile addition to their forward line. Whether Cristiano Ronaldo is still in Manchester come September 1 isn’t expected to have an effect on attempting to sign a new attacker.

Ajax winger Antony has emerged as a leading contender to bolster the ranks. The Brazilian is well known to Erik ten Hag through his time in Amsterdam and is capable of operating on either flank as well as centrally.

Ajax have placed a hefty £69m valuation on Antony. They’ll be emboldened to hold out for such a sizeable fee having already lost several key players this summer.

The next key asset they’ll lose is Lisandro Martinez, ironically to Manchester United.

Now, according to the Mirror, one of Antony’s agents, Junior Pedroso, flew into Manchester on Thursday to discuss a deal with United.

‘Official negotiations’ are on the agenda, though that is just one of three positive updates.

Ajax preparing for life without Antony

Secondly, Ajax have wrapped up a deal for Francisco Conceicao who is viewed as Antony’s direct replacement.

The 19-year-old Portuguese forward joined from Porto on Thursday after his £4.25m release clause was triggered.

Any doubts as to whether Conceicao is actually Antony’s successor have been definitively put to bed by Ajax chief, Gerry Hamstra.

Speaking to Dutch outlet, Het Parool, Hamstra said: “On the one hand you want to have immediately deployable players if you lose CL-worthy players.

“But at Ajax we also continue to think about the long term. How fast that happens depends on several factors.

“I can imagine that that goes a little faster with a Portuguese or European than with a boy from South America. So Conceição is another example of bringing the successor, in this case [for] Antony, into your selection.”

While the news thus far has been solely positive, there was one slightly concerning addition from Hamstra.

Given Ajax have already been gutted this window, Hamstra stated the Dutch side are determined to keep the core group they have left together.

“We now want to keep this group together,” continued Hamstra. “I assume that no one leaves this core anymore. Of course you can never say never, I’ve learned that by now.”

Brazilian the ideal addition?

It has been clear for all to see in pre-season that Ten Hag will demand his forward players are the first line of defence.

In Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence, the trio of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho have excelled.

They have all found the net at least twice, while all are combining on the defensive end to make life difficult for opposition defences deep within their own half.

Antony is well known to Ten Hag and would immediately pick up where he left off at Ajax. At 22, his prime years lay ahead and even if he flopped, would retain a high sell-on value given his age.

Furthermore, United do not currently boast a left-footed forward in their attacking ranks amid Mason Greenwood’s indefinite absence. Conveniently, Antony is a left-footer and would provide Ten Hag with a new dimension in his fluid front line.
