Aston Villa man Gabriel Agbonlahor has come out fighting against critics on social media and claimed that "people have short memories" - via the Birmingham Mail.

The 30-year-old was replying to a fan on Instagram who posted the message of support: "Villa legend. No matter what people say, you're our top Premier League goal scorer for a reason".

Clearly pleased with the nice comment, Agbonlahor (handle ga11official) thanked him after making his claim.

The striker has been out of action for Villa since the end of January after picking up a hamstring injury in training, but is hoping to return to action sooner rather than later - his last appearance came in the 2-2 draw against Preston North End in the Championship.

His last goal for the Villains came all the way back in February of last year, when Villa were still in the Premier League, against Norwich.

That strike was goal number 73 for the Midlands club, and was the only one he managed in the 2015/16 season before the club was relegated down to the Championship.

He remains their highest ever top flight goalscorer and will be hoping to get the chance to return to the Premier League to try and add to his tally.

Steve Bruce's side sit 11th in the table and are too far off the pace to be fighting for one of the play-off places, meaning Agbonlahor will be at least 31 by the time he's in a position to make it 74 strikes.
