Area Playoff: Jacksonville boys to face Athens on Hornets' home pitch

Mar. 28—ATHENS — Jacksonville's Class 4A, Region II Area playoff match against Athens will take place at 7 p.m. Friday at Bruce Field in Athens.

It's certainly not the Tribe's first choice of playoff venues, but given the match is taking place on Easter weekend and on Good Friday, tracking down a facility that could come up with a staff to work the game has proven to be a thorn in the side of soccer coaches throughout the state.

In general, area and regional quarterfinal matches are played at mutually agreed upon neutral sites.

The Tribe (21-4-1) are the District 16-4A champions while the Hornets (14-7-5) are the co-champs out of District 14-4A and are representing their loop as the second place team.

The Tribe blanked Henderson, 4-0, in the bi-district round Tuesday night.

Athens needed overtime to get past Pleasant Grove, 3-2, in its area showdown. That match was played in Hallsville.

The Jacksonville-Athens winner will take on either Kilgore or Lindale in the regional quarterfinal round early next week.
