'It's about the areas of improvement' - Cleverley on the transfer window

Every week, every press conference after every game – managers will now be asked about the upcoming transfer window almost as regularly as a rumour about their club signing or selling a player appears somewhere.

It’s been creeping into Tom Cleverley’s engagements with the media, and it won’t go away now until February.

The head coach was asked yesterday if strengthening in January was predicated on staying in the top six.

“The old clichés come out now about taking each game as it comes, but we feel we’ve done enough to be in the top-six picture,” he replied.

“Now it’s about the areas of improvement, and I think we are all on board with those as well.

“If we unlock those areas then I think we can kick on even further.

“I’m in constant contact with Gianluca Nani, Scott Duxbury and the owner, and we are trying to forward plan and see where we are maybe thin in numbers or we could bring a little bit more to our game.

“But I’m completely happy with the squad as it is at the minute, and I think we’re doing a good job of all pulling in the right direction.

“Like everything else at the club, if we see an area we can improve then we’ll try to do it.”

Even with the best laid plans, what happens in January could be affected by the next few weeks.

“Things like Tom Dele-Bashiru’s setback might trigger something. That sort of thing applies to all areas,” said the Watford boss.

"We’ve got two centre-halves out. If we were to get a third injured then that might trigger something too.

“It’s a moving landscape but I reiterate again how happy I am with the squad we’ve put together.”

Does Cleverley fear that an increase in the rumours surrounding a player like Giorgi Chakvetadze could have a negative effect?

“Giorgi isn’t the type that would lose focus,” he said.

“He’s a fantastic professional who does his job to the highest standard he can, and lives his life right off the pitch.

“I’m sure there will be interest in him, but I know he’ll stay focussed.

“It was a question Scott was asked at the fans forum and he said we try and run a budget where it means we don’t have to sell our best players in January.

“I’m sure that will be the case.”
