Arnaut Danjuma has been handed the no16 shirt after putting pen to paper on a six-month loan deal with Tottenham.

Spurs’ first signing of the January transfer window arrives having already undergone a medical at Everton before a late call to join Antonio Conte in north London.

Tottenham announced the deal on Wednesday after Villarreal agreed to let Dutch winger Danjuma leave 18 months after arriving from Bournemouth.

Spurs are believed to have an option - not an obligation - to buy the player on a permanent transfer in the summer for a fee of around £26million plus add-ons.

Previous players to have donned the no16 shirt at Tottenham in recent times include Gareth Bale, Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier. It has been vacant since the permanent departure of right-back Kyle Walker-Peters to Southampton in the summer of 2020.

Other players to have worn it include the likes of Reto Ziegler, Paul Konchesky, Iago Falque, Lee Young-pyo, Steffen Iversen, Ronny Rosenthal, Micky Hazard, Ally Dick, Ian Culverhouse, Cyril Knowles, Alan Gilzean and Jimmy Pearce.

Danjuma could make a quick Tottenham debut in Saturday’s FA Cup fourth-round tie away at Championship side Preston.

“I’m delighted to be here,” he said. “Obviously, this opportunity is very important to me. I’m just really happy to be here.

“To be honest with you, as soon as Tottenham Hotspur came through, it was a no brainer. It is a massive club with a brilliant coach, brilliant staff and the facilities are obviously unbelievable. So, for me, I’m very, very excited to be part of the team.

“I hope to be positive, hope to leave a good impact, hope to be able to prove my qualities as a player, hope to give something new and something enthusiastic for the fans. And obviously aim for the highest possible in every competition we are competing in.”
