The Villarreal attacker Arnaut Danjuma has undergone a medical at Tottenham Hotspur, with the club having persuaded the player to abandon a deal already agreed with Everton last week to join the Goodison Park relegation battle until the end of the season.

Danjuma, 25, will instead join Spurs on loan until the end of the season, most likely taking the place of Lucas Moura whose contract expires at the end of the season and is currently out with a long-term injury. Spurs have space among non-homegrown players in their first team squad to accommodate the player. Villarreal have not agreed with Spurs an option to buy at the end of the season but that may be a possibility, once the deal to join is finalised.

Danjuma, an international with Holland, although not selected for the World Cup squad, conducted an audition of clubs for his loan this season. The former Bournemouth player and his representatives met with clubs and then later told those they had selected that they had made it through to the “next round” in the competition to sign the player on loan. Everton were finally chosen last week as Danjuma’s preferred destination. He completed a medical at the club but did not formally agree the deal - which allowed Spurs to move on him.

It means that Everton, without a manager, and possibly about to lose one of their two leading goalscorers this season, Anthony Gordon, need to look elsewhere. The sale of Richarlison and the injuries to Dominic Calvert-Lewin have played a major part in their struggles this season.

Out of favour at Villarreal, Danjuma had a wide range of choices as a Premier League-experienced striker who was available. Southampton, Nottingham Forest and his former club Bournemouth were all hopeful of signing the player. So too PSV Eindhoven after they sold Noni Madueke, the England Under-21 international, to Chelsea.

Before Villareal, Danjuma had two seasons playing with Bournemouth, whom he joined from Club Brugge in 2019. He played in the Premier League relegation season and the subsequent Championship season in which the club reached the play-off semi-finals, in which he scored 17 goals across 37 games in all competitions. His goal return over a season and a half at Villarreal has been close to a goal every two games.
