Arne Slot’s prospective assistant at Liverpool has delivered a somewhat cryptic response when asked whether he will be joining him at Anfield.

Slot officially started his time in charge of the Reds two days ago, having been confirmed as the club’s new head coach following Jurgen Klopp’s departure. The Dutchman is set to bring his own backroom staff with him to Merseyside, with Klopp’s team having followed him out of the exit door.

Ruben Peeters’ representatives have already confirmed he will be joining Liverpool as the club’s new first team lead physical performance coach, having worked alongside Slot at Feyenoord. The 45-year-old’s assistant in Rotterdam, Sipke Hulshoff, is also expected to follow him and become the new No.2 at Anfield.

Hulshoff resigned from his role with the Netherlands, where he was part of Ronald Koeman’s coaching staff. The 49-year-old’s arrival at Liverpool would have otherwise been delayed by Euro 2024, which gets underway on June 14.

Speaking to RTV NOF (via Omrop Fryslan) over the weekend though, Hulshoff gave a cryptic answer when questioned on his expected move to Liverpool.

“I can’t go into too much detail, but ultimately it is the head coach who decides who comes along,” he said. “And the collaboration with Arne is at such a good level that his confidence in me is also great and that is wonderful.”

Despite Hulshoff suggesting it might not be a done deal just yet, Virgil van Dijk already seems to have confirmed his appointment as Slot’s assistant at Liverpool. The Reds captain told NOS: “I am very happy for [Slot] and his family, and also for Sipke of course, despite the fact that he will not be [with the national team].”

Liverpool.com says: It is a cryptic response from Hulshoff, but he is likely just keeping his cards close to his chest while Liverpool finalizes the deal for him to join Slot at Anfield. It’s worth bearing in mind that the club hasn’t even done an unveiling as such for Slot, with just a confirmation of his appointment so far.

That might well be due to ironing out the last few pieces of the jigsaw with his backroom staff. Either way, it would be a shock if Hulshoff didn’t join Slot at Anfield.
