Arne Slot and Jamie Carragher have differing views on Liverpool’s progress this season, with the Dutchman not wanting to get ahead of himself just yet.

The Reds will be looking to build upon their perfect start to the campaign when they take on Nottingham Forest at Anfield later today. Having taken over from Jurgen Klopp during the summer, Slot has hit the ground running with three wins out of three in the Premier League while not conceding a single goal.

Liverpool is one of only two teams to still hold a 100 per cent record so far alongside Manchester City, with their credentials as title contenders already being talked up.

Speaking after the 3-0 win over Manchester United, Carragher told Sky Sports: "The majority of the players have won everything there is to win, it gives them real belief in a manager moving forward that maybe this team is closer to challenging for the league title than many people think.”

Slot though is not giving any thought to a potential title challenge just yet, with his tenure at Anfield still just three games old. Writing in his programme notes ahead of the game against Forest, the Liverpool boss insisted there is still work for his side to do, despite the praise that has been offered.

“Our early objective was to take as many points as we could from our first three games and we managed to do that,” Slot said. “At the same time, though, neither myself nor anyone else associated with the first team believes we have done so well that there is no room for improvement. In reality, the opposite is true.

“This is not to dampen excitement or to play down expectations – we want our fans to believe in what we are doing and to have hopes based on what they are seeing from the team. But at the same time, we have a collective responsibility to find areas for improvement wherever they may be and this will always be our approach whether results are good, bad or indifferent.”

Liverpool.com says: It’s still early days in Slot’s tenure, and much tougher assignments are still to come. Let’s face it, United was supposed to be a tough test, but Erik ten Hag’s side still look miles off challenging for the title, or for the top four for that matter.

With the games coming thick and fast over the next few weeks, this will be when Slot and his players will be truly tested. If they can keep pace with City in the league while also getting off to a good start in Europe, then we might have a title challenge on our hands.
