Horse racing: Arrogate becomes biggest-earning horse with World Cup win

Arrogate has now claimed over $17million in prize money after putting on another sensational show in Dubai.

Arrogate stormed from the back of the field to win to the Dubai World Cup and become the highest earning racehorse in history at Meydan on Saturday.

The four-year-old colt went off as the 1-3 favourite for the US $10million Group One race, but was last after a poor start under Mike Smith on the dirt.

Arrogate showed why he is rated as the best horse in the world, though, surging down the outside with a rapid turn of pace to beat 7-1 shot Gun Runner by two and a quarter lengths.

The Bob Baffert-trained superstar hit the front 200 metres from home and was never going to be caught, charging to a seventh consecutive success and taking a whopping $6million in prize money.

Smith steered the American sensation from eight lengths behind Gun Runner at the turn for the final straight and he pulled well clear, putting on a show for a huge crowd in the final race of the day, with Neolithic taking third.

Arrogate has now earned in excess of $17m, having won the Pegasus World Cup in January after a Breeders' Cup Classic triumph last November.

Veteran jockey Smith said: "He can do anything. He can go fast, he can go slow, he can come from behind or go from the front and look at him, he's not even out of breath. Everyone's done a wonderful job with him."

Jack Hobbs won the $6million Group One Dubai Sheema Classic by the same distance, as favourite Postponed could only finish third.

It was a first victory since September 2015 for the five-year-old, ridden by William Buick and trained by John Gosden.

Vivlos took the Dubai Turf at 14/1, with favourite Zarak finishing a disappointing fourth. There were also Group One wins for Mind Your Biscuits and The Right Man in the Dubai Golden Shaheen and Al Quoz Sprint respectively.
