Arsenal booked their place in the 2019-20 FA Cup final with a robust win against a lacklustre Manchester City as Mikel Arteta claimed victory over his former boss Pep Guardiola.

A clinical Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang double saw off City with Arsenal now awaiting the outcome of Sunday's second semi-final between Chelsea and Manchester United to learn their opponents in the final.

Guardiola typically made five changes to the side that beat Bournemouth last time out, with Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne returning as City continued their search for a ninth domestic title from the last ten.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles was the surprise inclusion as Arteta brought Aubameyang back into the side following their impressive victory against Liverpool. Neither Matteo Guendouzi or Mesut Ozil made the squad.

It was the captain who gave Arsenal an early lead against the run of play. After missing a glorious chance just moments earlier, Aubameyang redeemed himself with a delightful poked finish into the far corner following Pepe's whipped cross from the right.

Arsenal could have been 2-0 up before the break after an uncharacteristically sloppy pass from Ederson saw De Bruyne dispossessed in his area. Aubameyang - who looked destined to score - failed to capitalise, with his Pepe-bound pass intercepted.

The Gunners were put under immense pressure with City pushing for the equaliser after the break. But again, Arsenal scored against the run of play. Aubameyang raced through following Tierney's searching ball before slotting it between the legs of Ederson.

City continued to throw the kitchen sink at Arsenal in search for a moment of inspiration but found nothing. Aymeric Laporte's left-footed strike whistled inches past the post in an effort that summed up City's evening: just not quite there. Arsenal held on to hand City their first domestic Cup defeat in two-and-a-half years.

Arsenal are the most successful team in FA Cup history with 13 titles and in victory they move one step closer to a 14th. They also edge a step closer towards qualification for the Europa League which is also up grabs for the competition winner. Sat ninth in the table with two games remaining, the Cup might be their best opportunity.

In defeat, City's hope of a treble come crashing down, though Guardiola's side can still make history in the Champions League where they face Real Madrid in a last-16 second leg in August.
