Arsenal’s prospects of luring Youri Tielemans to the club in January are fading fast – but all is not lost for the Gunners with Leicester coming to a big decision on his future, TEAMtalk can reveal.

The Belgian star is now into the final nine months of his contract at the King Power Stadium. Regarded as one of the best midfielders outside the top six clubs, it came as a surprise that Tielemans did not secure a summer move.

And while Arsenal did look strongly into his signature, no offer was forthcoming despite lengthy talks with his agent. Ultimately, Mikel Arteta and Co decided to pursue a deal for Douglas Luiz, with their £20m-plus deadline day offer failing.

Luiz has since gone on to sign a new deal at Villa Park, leading Arsenal to turn their attention elsewhere.

Now – with just 61 days to go until the January window opens  – the Gunners are being strongly linked with Tielemans again.

Arteta and Edu remain keen to add a new midfielder to their ranks in January. While the Gunners are riding high at the top of the Premier League, the club are acutely aware they will need more strength in depth if they are to last the title distance.

However, TEAMtalk can reveal Leicester will reject all January offers for their captain.

Foxes manager Brendan Rodgers has previously suggested the club would prefer to avoid losing the player on a free.

Youri Tielemans Arsenal deal won’t happen yet

But with the club now fighting relegation, Tielemans is deemed too important to lose now. As such, TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey is adamant that nothing will be done in the January window.

“Tielemans’ future lies away from Leicester, 100 per cent. We know that from his reluctance to even talk about a new contract,” Bailey told TEAMtalk. “But Brendan Rodgers is adamant they won’t sell in January. And, given their start to the new season, it is no surprise that they won’t want to lose him.

“There are firm rumours that Leicester (as a football club) are on the market, or will be in 2023. And with that in mind, together with plans for the stadium to be expanded, Leicester simply cannot afford relegation.

“As a result, Leicester have decided it’s better they take a hit on Tielemans next summer by losing him for free. They absolutely do not intend to sell him now and seriously weaken their squad.”

Newcastle are also being linked with Tielemans in January, but they too will also get the same response.

Free transfer next summer on cards for Belgian star

As a result, we can reveal a free transfer next summer – and most likely to Arsenal – is on the cards.

“That is not say others won’t be looking and trying to test Leicester’s resolve,” Bailey added. “We know Arsenal like the player a lot and need a midfielder and it is the same with Newcastle United – both could look to try and tempt Leicester.

“But in all likelihood and from what both Rodgers and our sources are saying, it is a free transfer next summer that is firmly on the cards for the Belgian star.”

Despite the January setback, Arsenal are still looking to bolster their central midfield options in the winter market.

As such, Tuesday’s Euro Paper Talk claims they are turning their attentions towards a Brazilian star as part of a double South American raid.

The Gunners will have around £50m to spend in January and believe they can land two players within that budget.

But they will then likely turn their attentions back towards Tielemans in the summer.

Tielemans has been with Leicester since 2019 and has made 172 appearances for the Foxes.
