Ange Postecoglou remained coy on the topic of Mathys Tel amid reports Tottenham have agreed a deal with Bayern Munich for a permanent transfer. The 19-year-old looked set to remain in Germany despite interest from Chelsea before completing a major transfer U-turn.

Aston Villa, Arsenal, Manchester United and Spurs have since joined the race for his signature with the latter pushing hard. With Dominic Solanke and James Maddison the latest attackers to join the injury list, Postecoglou is in need of more options up top.

Since it became clear Tel was available, Spurs have explored a permanent deal with L'Equipe claiming a £50.2million (€60m) fee has been agreed with Bayern and though academy trio Dane Scarlett, Damola Ajayi and Mikey Moore all scored in Spurs' 3-0 Europa League win against Elfsborg, it is highly unlikely any potential move is abandoned.

After that triumph in Europe, Postecoglou was asked about Tel signing for the club but understandably opted to not give much away. “I can't tell you anything about Tel. I've been focusing on getting the team prepared tonight," he admitted in a press conference.

"Other people are working in the background. As I've said all along, I'm allowing them to get on with it and when and if there's any news I'm sure I'll find out.” Sporting director Johan Lange is certainly one of those as he was in Munich on Wednesday evening when Tel featured in the 3-0 Champions League win against Slovan Bratislava.

Though Spurs are quite clearly frontrunners, Arsenal and Chelsea remain in the race for his signature with a loan move elsewhere still possible if he decides not to join Spurs. Staying at Bayern could also be the case with Vincent Kompany offering a new update on his future.

"He is still a Bayern player," he said at a press conference. "Until the last moment, it’s important that he is ready to play. If something happens, then it happens.” If he does stay, the Blues have Alejandro Garnacho as a potential alternative while Mikel Arteta could look to the France international if a deal for Ollie Watkins cannot be agreed.

The Gunners launched a bid for the Aston Villa striker earlier this week that was rejected. An improved offer was being lined up but their pursuit has been derailed by Jhon Duran's move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr which is expected to go through imminently.
