Arsenal confident of Lucas Torreira and Bernd Leno deals as Unai Emery spends transfer budget

Arsenal are confident of securing the signings of Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira and Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

The duo are expected to cost the Gunners a combined £46million, with Sampdoria receiving £26m for Uruguayan international Torreira and Leno setting the Gunners back a further £20m.

That would mean, as Standard Sport reported earlier this month, that Unai Emery would have spent his summer transfer budget within just a few weeks of his appointment.

Arsenal are able to press forward with a deal for Leno in the coming days after he was trimmed from Germany’s World Cup squad but are reluctant to unduly disrupt Torreira’s preparation for Uruguay's Group A fixtures, the next of which is against Saudi Arabia on Wednesday.

Torreira, who came off the bench in La Celeste’s 1-0 win over Egypt, is believed to have agreed personal terms before the tournament began.

With Torreira and Leno on the horizon, Emery will be able to reflect on a productive first month in the transfer window, where the Gunners are operating with notably greater decisiveness since the arrival of heads of recruitment and football relations Sven Mislintat and Raul Sanllehi.

Stephan Lichtsteiner has joined from Juventus on a free transfer whilst the arrival of Sokratis Papastathopoulos will be announced in July.

Should Arsenal get both deals across the line, the focus will then shift to trimming back the first-team squad, with Emery needing to sell if he wishes to top up his transfer budget.

Lucas Perez and Joel Campbell are available for transfer and the former has attracted interest from Lazio. Arsenal would prefer a permanent deal rather than to loan the Spanish striker out again after he struggled at hometown club Deportivo La Coruna.

It is understood that Calum Chambers, linked with a move to Fulham, is not currently expected to be made available with Emery keen to observe what progress both he and Rob Holding make in the preseason.
