Arsenal have confirmed that Shkodran Mustafi will miss the start of the 2020/21 Premier League season after suffering a "significant" hamstring injury in the club's FA Cup semi-final win over Manchester City.

The defender - who has experienced a major upturn in form following the arrival of Mikel Arteta - joins both Calum Chambers and Pablo Mari on the sidelines, with Arsenal left short in defence for their Wembley date with Chelsea on Saturday.

The Gunners have now confirmed that Mustafi successfully underwent a "small procedure" over the weekend and is expected to return to full training in October.

His rehabilitation will take him beyond the start of next season's Premier League campaign, which is due to begin on September 12.

Providing an update on Mustafi's injury, an Arsenal statement read: "Right hamstring injury sustained during Emirates FA Cup semi-final on July 18.

"Further assessments during the week identified a significant injury to the right hamstring. As a result, Shkodran had a successful small procedure to his right hamstring on Saturday.

"Shkodran is now in the early stages of his recovery and rehabilitation, receiving specialist attention and support from our medical team.

"Aiming to return to full training in October."

While Arteta also confirmed on Monday that first-choice goalkeeper Bernd Leno was nearing a return to action after injury, he stated Arsenal would now look to the transfer market for reinforcements in Mustafi's absence.

“Now we’ve lost Musti, so at the back we’re really touched and short," he said. "Musti has been playing really consistently and at a really good level with me.

“He pulled the tendon off the bone in his hamstring and that’s normally a lot of weeks. I already mentioned three central defenders that are not available and we haven’t had them available for a long time during the season. And we will have to address that.”
