Mikel Arteta has revealed Arsenal offered him a new contract after they lost three games on the spin earlier this month.

Arteta signed a new contract on Friday, penning fresh terms until 2025, with his previous deal due to expire at the end of next season.

The deal was announced in the wake of Arsenal winning three games on the spin and climbing to fourth in the Premier League table.

But Arteta has revealed he was first offered a new contract earlier this month, when the Gunners slipped to sixth after losing to Crystal Palace, Brighton and Southampton.

“The club offered me the contract when we lost three matches,” said Arteta. “And that day I went like this, chapeau and go. That doesn’t happen in football.

“That’s a part of what they think, the conversations that I had, the belief that they have in myself, the coaching staff, in what we are doing and the people that we have now owning this football club and leading this football club.

“I haven’t ever seen it and I just got emotional when I see it, because I just said, ‘These guys are serious and these guys are committed’. So, I better push forward.”

Arsenal’s owners, Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, are excited about what the future holds with Arteta and insist he is the right man to get the club back to competing for top honours again, with their last Premier League title coming in 2004.

The Spaniard, who was appointed by Arsenal in December 2019, won the FA Cup in his first season and, despite enduring a difficult second year and tough start to the current campaign, is close to guiding the club back to the Champions League.

Arsenal currently sit fourth in the Premier League with four games to go and are two points ahead of Tottenham in fifth, who they face next week.

“Probably the way I would define it, it would be empathy, the same purpose and trust,” said Arteta, when speaking about his relationship with KSE.

“Empathy because the moment I got to know, Josh [Kroenke], from the first meeting I got a real sense that the energy was flowing. We were really clear and direct.

“He was showing the same ambition as I was. He could see the club at the same point and he wanted to take the club the way I wanted to do it.

“So everything that he’s said, and that Stan has said when I’ve been together with both of them, they’ve always delivered.

“I think that’s been a relationship that both ways has been exactly the same, so I’m extremely happy with them, with what they are doing, with their involvement, with the commitment they are showing and with the relationship that we have built together.

“With myself, with Edu, with Rich, with Tim Lewis, with Vinai. That is really, really important because that connection and that communication has to be there at all times because this is a moving thing and they are extremely important to it.”
