Arsenal defender William Saliba will miss the next domestic match after being shown a straight red card against Bournemouth - next Sunday's meeting with Liverpool.

The Frenchman was initially given a yellow card by referee Rob Jones for hauling down Evanilson, having made no attempt to play the ball. However, a VAR review saw the decision upgraded to a straight red card.

Saliba, barring a successful appeal, will now miss the home Premier League game with Liverpool next weekend. Explaining the reason behind Saliba's dismissal, the Premier League said: "The referee gave Saliba a yellow card for a challenge on Evanilson.

"The VAR deemed that Saliba denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and recommended an on-field review. The referee then upgraded the yellow to a red card."

Saliba will not miss the Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday with domestic bans not carrying over into Europe. Saliba's sending off is Arsenal's third of the season, more than any other Premier League club.

Declan Rice was shown a second yellow card for kicking the ball away against Brighton in August before Leandro Trossard was sent off in the same manner for the same offence against Manchester City in September. As a result of Saliba's red card against Bournemouth, Raheem Sterling was taken off early and replaced by Jakub Kiwior, who was later taken off for his role in Arsenal giving away a penalty.
