Arsenal and Newcastle have been issued a clear message that winger target Moussa Diaby is not for sale by Bayer Leverkusen.

Diaby is on the radar of both Premier League clubs after a campaign in which he scored 17 goals for Bayer Leverkusen. He also added 14 assists within his 42 appearances between the Bundesliga, Europa League and DFB-Pokal.

In turn, the 22-year-old has alerted many suitors across Europe. Arsenal and Newcastle are both looking for attacking reinforcements, with Diaby appearing on both of their wish-lists.

However, a recent report suggested Newcastle may have to drop out of the race due to a huge £60m price tag. While the Magpies could afford such an investment, they must keep their spending under control.

They could therefore turn their attention to more accessible targets. And it may not be just Newcastle who are forced to drop their interest, but Arsenal too.

Simon Rolfes, the director of sport at Bayer Leverkusen, has now revealed that Diaby is not for sale – not that any offers have arrived at his desk anyway.

Rolfes told the Daily Express: “No, no. For sure we want to keep Moussa for as long as possible.

“I know a lot of scouts have been sitting on our tribune during our matches because we have a lot of interesting, exciting young players with high potential.

“So, it’s the same with Patrik Schick. We do not have any offers for him but we are not even looking for that at the moment. We would like to keep him and play with him next year in the Champions League.”

Moussa Diaby development explained

The 17 goals Diaby scored last season represented a career-best tally. In fact, in his previous two campaigns with the club, he had scored a combined total of 18 goals.

Increasing his efficiency in front of goal will only benefit the market value of a player under contract until 2025.

Rolfes has explained how the Frenchman can take credit for the work he has done to improve in such a key aspect of his game.

The director said: “When I see for example Moussa Diaby from when he joined three years ago compared to now in front of the goal, it’s not by coincidence that he scores more goals.

“You can see it in training. He works a lot on his finishing. He missed a lot of goals a few years ago, also in training but now it’s different. You can see the progress of our players.”

It seems the next phase of Diaby’s progress will still be in Germany.
