Arsenal have been handed a huge update on forgotten transfer target Ollie Watkins ahead of the summer window officially opening. The Gunners appear likely to sign a striker in the upcoming trading period however Benjamin Sesko and Alexander Isak have been the main names linked over the Aston Villa star.

Newcastle's eye-watering asking price for Isak seen interest from Emirates Stadium cool in recent days though, but the opposite has occurred with regard to Sesko. According to the Mirror, he prefers a summer transfer to Arsenal over any other Manchester United and Chelsea with the Gunners also placing him at the top of their striker wish list.

Given his €65million (£55m) release clause, which is rather cheap considering the transfer deals currently being sanctioned, it is completely understandable that interest has arrived from the Premier League. Sesko managed 18 goals in the most recent campaign with Watkins significantly trumping his return.

In the 2023/24 season, the 28-year-old contributed to 40 goals from 53 games in all competitions. In comparison to Isak and Sesko, the former Brentford striker has made a much more considerable impact but with that has arrived a firm transfer stance from Villa.

Fresh off Unai Emery signing a new long-term contract, it is seen as highly unlikely Watkins will depart however Villa may be forced to make a marquee sale in order to continue complying with profit and sustainability regulations. Watkins could be the player sacrificed and if that is the case, Arsenal may opt to change their transfer priority with a free run at Watkins now clear.

On Thursday, reports emerged Liverpool were after the signature of Watkins however football.london's sister title, the Liverpool Echo has made it clear Liverpool are not interested in the striker. As such, the Gunners will be free of any competition with Watkins likely open to a switch that would fulfil a childhood dream.

“I’m an Arsenal fan so Thierry Henry was my [idol] he’s unbelievable to watch. He was the idol growing up really," he revealed in an interview back during his time at Brentford.

Just a few weeks ago, Watkins was spotted looking rather solemn at Villa's awards evening with that night also when Man City went above Arsenal in the Premier League table and thus took control of the title race following a 2-0 victory against Tottenham.
