Arsenal are reportedly ready to make a move for midfielder Moises Caicedo should they get any indication that Brighton would be willing to sell him this month.
The 21-year-old is one of the most exciting players in his position at the moment, with the Seagulls enjoying a fantastic start to the Premier League campaign.
Liverpool and Chelsea have both previously registered an interest in signing the Ecuador international, so Arsenal may have a bidding war on their hands if he does become available.
In fact, according to a report from 90min, Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle, Chelsea and Manchester United are all ready to bid for Caicedo should Brighton consider letting him go.
However, it would be a surprise to see Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi willing to let him leave, given how well he has played this season.
Brighton currently find themselves in seventh place in the league table after a phenomenal start to the campaign.
The Seagulls have picked up impressive wins against the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea, with Caicedo being key to their excellent performances.
Operating generally from a a defensive midfield position, the Ecuadorian is an aggressive player, with the energy to also play as a traditional box-to-box man.
This season, he has made the second-most fouls in the division, as well as being in the top five for successful tackles in the opposition’s half, which suggests he could be a real asset to any team that adopts a high press.
In terms of goal contributions, Caicedo has scored one goal and created one so far, but he generally looks a threat when he gets the ball close to his opponent’s penalty area.
With that in mind, it’s unsurprising to see so many top clubs vying for his signature.
Arsenal could certainly do with some midfield reinforcements. Mohamed Elneny is being linked with a move to Aston Villa, while Thomas Partey has struggled with injuries at times despite being at the peak of his powers at present.
Liverpool’s hunt for a new centre-mid is well-documented, too. Fabinho has been struggling for form recently, whilst Harvey Elliot is an outstanding prospect but not quite yet the finished article.
As for Chelsea, they look set to lose Jorginho at the end of the season, while N’Golo Kante has also been linked with a summer departure.
Graham Potter would undoubtedly love to be reunited with his former player, who he rates very highly
When he was still Brighton manager, Potter responded to rumours that there had been a £42m bid for Caicedo.
Speaking in a press conference, he said:
“I think you’d probably get his boots for that (£42m) for the chairman maybe, knowing the chairman.”
When asked if it would be closer to £100m, Potter laughed and said: “Yeah, well they can try.”
In reality, that is the kind of fee that would likely be required for Brighton to sell Caicedo, as he is undoubtedly one of the club’s most important players.
If any of the mentioned teams want to get a deal over the line, they will have to put their money where their mouth is.
