Arsenal legend pans ‘very shaky’ Man Utd star who’ll ruin Ten Hag if exposed to one simple tactic
Arsenal legend Ian Wright labelled an under-fire Man Utd star “very, very shaky”, and questioned why more teams aren’t utilising a tactic that’ll torpedo Erik ten Hag’s side.
It was another evening to forget for David de Gea on Sunday. The veteran Spaniard was at fault for Said Benrahma’s winner in the 1-0 defeat that’s breathed new life into the race for top four.
Liverpool are hunting Man Utd down having won six on the spin. United still hold a one-point advantage and have a game in hand, though the contrast in form couldn’t be more stark.
The blunder was De Gea’s fourth that’s directly led to a goal being conceded this season. That ties him with Tottenham’s fast fading Higo Lloris as the Premier League-based goalkeepers with the most errors leading to a goal this season.
The mistake came at just the wrong time for De Gea who is currently in discussions with United over a new contract. The Manchester Evening News reported some within the club are questioning whether it’s wise to re-sign the 32-year-old.
Another who has doubts over De Gea’s long-term viability at Old Trafford is Arsenal legend, Ian Wright.
The former striker and BBC pundit branded De Gea “very, very shaky” with speaking to Premier League Productions following the West Ham defeat.
Wright claimed De Gea is suffering from lapses in concentration and urged Man Utd to take a fresh look at their goalkeeping position.
Wright also questioned why teams don’t fully exploit De Gea’s unease when surrounded by lots of bodies in the box at corners.
In Wright’s mind, exclusively firing in in-swinging corners would be De Gea and by extension Man Utd’s worst nightmare.
De Gea “never comfortable” when it gets physical – Wright
“At some stage, Manchester United are going to have to look at that position,” said Wright (via the Manchester Evening News).
“The concentration just isn’t there at times. Is it a priority position for them? Maybe it’s not. But that goal could cost them the Champions League.
“Whenever you get bodies around him, he gets very, very shaky.
“I still can’t understand why teams don’t put in-swinging corners in to him at every single opportunity. He’s never comfortable in that situation.”
