Arsenal and Newcastle have found out whether they will be able to sign Moussa Diaby this summer after the Bayer Leverkusen star made an admission about his future.

Newcastle have been monitoring Diaby’s situation in recent months as they aim to bolster Eddie Howe’s ranks out wide. The Magpies were willing to put £35million on the table in June, according to German source Sport1.

However, Leverkusen do not want Diaby to leave the BayArena and have given him a £60m price tag.

This has made Newcastle take one step back in their pursuit of the France international, who is on eight caps so far.

Arsenal joined the hunt recently amid Newcastle’s uncertainty. Journalist Pete O’Rourke claims the Gunners could move for Diaby after losing out on Raphinha to Barcelona.

The winger has generally kept quiet on the transfer links, but that has now changed.

During an interview with German outlet RP Online, Diaby said (via Shields Gazette): “I’ve made my decision and will play for Bayer Leverkusen again next season.”

That comment means Arsenal and Newcastle are extremely unlikely to land the 23-year-old this summer.

That could change next year if a major bid is sent to Leverkusen. They are willing to sell as long as Diaby’s £60m valuation is met.

However, Arsenal and Newcastle will probably now start targeting players who are available straight away.

Mikel Arteta already has strong options up front and on either flank. But with Bukayo Saka picking up interest from rival Premier League teams, the Gunners might have to start sounding out potential successors.

They are keeping tabs on Real Madrid ace Marco Asensio, and are once again joined by Newcastle in this race.

Asensio appears to be positioning himself for a summer move after changing his agent.

Newcastle need a new winger more than Arsenal and have several players in mind.

Maxwel Cornet of Burnley is among those under consideration. The Ivorian has shown he is able to play as a left-back, left winger or up front.

Another option is Watford’s Emmanuel Dennis. He usually plays as a centre-forward but is also comfortable on either flank.

As these two players are now at Championship clubs, they shouldn’t cost Newcastle a huge sum.

Diaby may no longer be an option for the Magpies, but they are still set to bring in a new wide player before next season starts.

Meanwhile, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has confirmed Oleksandr Zinchenko is going to Arsenal.
