Arsenal have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Brighton & Hove Albion’s Leandro Trossard this winter, after missing out on Mykhaylo Mudryk, who joined Chelsea on Saturday.
The Belgium international had a very public falling out with Seagulls manager Roberto de Zerbi and as a result, he now seems willing to let the attacker leave the club.
The Gunners decided against outbidding Chelsea for Mudryk, who made the switch from Shakhtar Donetsk for a staggering €100m (£88.7m), so Trossard could represent a much more affordable option.
It has been widely reported that Brighton have put a £25m price tag on Trossard and now, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Arsenal have been ‘offered’ the player.
This news comes shortly after the player allegedly returned to his home country Belgium after falling out with Brighton’s new manager De Zerbi.
The 28-year-old was also not in the squad for Brighton’s recent 3-0 win over Liverpool, which seems to have confirmed the rumours.
After 18 matches, Arsenal currently sit eight points clear at the top of the table and have been a pleasure to watch.
As mentioned, the Gunners recently missed out on signing Mudryk as Mikel Arteta looks to add attacking quality to his squad to help maintain their push for their first league title since 2004.
However, with Gabriel Jesus expected to be sidelined for at least three months with a knee injury he picked up at the World Cup, this has only increased the demand to bring in at least one quality player this month. Trossard, potentially, could be the answer.
Arsenal face Tottenham competition for Trossard as he looks to leave Brighton
Despite featuring just twice for De Zerbi’s side since the World Cup break, Trossard has still been in impressive form this season.
In the Premier League, the Belgium international has scored seven goals in 16 league appearances this season, also contributing three assists. He also memorably notched a hat-trick against Liverpool at Anfield earlier in the campaign.
This helped the Seagulls get off to an excellent start, and they currently sit seventh in the table ahead of Sunday’s fixtures, just five points away from the top four.
Trossard’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the season, but Brighton have the option to extend his stay by 12 months and it is believed they have already done so in an attempt to increase his transfer value.
As reported by TEAMtalk, Tottenham Hotspur are prepared to make a ‘big offer’ to sign the Belgian this winter, so Arteta and co will have to move quickly to avoid being beaten to another transfer target, by another London rival.
Indeed, Spurs are in need of attacking reinforcements too. Lucas Moura is expected to leave the club at the end of the season, while Richarlison has only recently recovered from an injury.
Reports suggest that Chelsea are also considering a move for Trossard, so a bidding war could take place. While this is good news for Brighton, it’s definitely not for anyone who wants to sign him.
Nevertheless, if Arteta thinks Trossard possesses the quality to help his team to lift the title this season, then this is a deal they absolutely cannot afford to miss out on.
Whether or not Arsenal will make their own bid for Trossard, however, remains to be seen.
