Arsenal returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a confidence boosting 2-0 win over Newcastle ahead of their Europa League semi-final second leg against Villarreal on Thursday.

Here is how Jack Rosser rated the Arsenal players at St James’ Park...

Mat Ryan 6

Had very little to deal with on his third Arsenal start but stood up when called upon.

Hector Bellerin 6

Played a role in the early opener with a cross from the right. No trouble defensively.

David Luiz 7

Kept things tight at the back - admittedly against little opposition - on his return from injury before being he forced off just six minutes into the second half.

Gabriel 7

Should have doubled Arsenal’s lead just after the hour mark but he sent a header over the bar.

Granit Xhaka 7

Picked up an early booking but another good display as a make-shift full-back.

Mohamed Elneny 8

Calmed any nerves with a fantastic first Premier League goal after just five minutes and controlled the midfield thereafter.

Dani Ceballos 7

A far more encouraging display than Thursday night against Villarreal. Showed some nice touches and helped the Gunners dictate the afternoon.

Willian 6

A quiet afternoon from the former Chelsea man, hardly the sort of performance that will get him in the side for Thursday.

Martin Odegaard 7

Offered intensity and vision against a tightly packed Newcastle defence.

Gabriel Martinelli 7

Proved a threat throughout down the left and put the ball on a plate for Aubameyang’s goal with a delicious cross. Fortunate to avoid a bad injury late on following a horror tackle from Fabian Schar.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang 7

Back in for a first start since April 3 after suffering from malaria, looked bright in the box from the off and found his finishing touch with a well taken goal after the break.

Substitutes

Calum Chambers 6

Ensured the loss of David Luiz was not at all felt after slotting in alongside Gabriel at the back.

Thomas Partey n/a
