Arsenal booked themselves a place in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup with a comfortable win over Sunderland.

Eddie Nketiah opened the scoring after 17 minutes and before the hour mark he had completed his hat-trick as Arsenal eventually ran out 5-1 winners.

Nicolas Pepe also got on the scoresheet, but Sunderland got a goal of their own in the first-half when Nathan Broadhead finished well after a slick counter.

Arsenal then rounded off the victory in perfect fashion as debutant Charlie Patino scored deep into injury-time.

Simon Collings ran the rule over Arsenal...

Bernd Leno 6

Had a fairly quiet night in goal. Perhaps could have done a little better with the Sunderland goal, but it was a good finish.

Cedric 7

Looked decent going forward and grabbed himself an assist by setting up Pepe. Defensively he was out of position on a few occasions.

Ben White 6

Didn’t cover himself in glory for the Sunderland goal, but other than that he was solid enough. Picked to start in the absence of Pablo Mari.

Rob Holding 7

Captain for the night and had a solid game. He has definitely improved playing out from the back this season.

Nuno Tavares 7

As is often the case with the youngster, looks better going forwards than backwards. Caused problems down the left flank.

Mohamed Elneny 6

He was fine. Sat in front of the back-four and kept things simple with his passing, while breaking up play too. Hard to see how he gets into the Premier League side, though.

Martin Odegaard 8

Started quietly but his influence grew as the game went on. Had a couple of lovely touches and passes. Looked a cut above the other midfield players.

Emile Smith Rowe 7

Good for him to start after coming off the bench in the last two games. Looked bright and linked the play well.

Nicolas Pepe 8

The winger should be putting a team like Sunderland to the sword and he did so. Finished the night with a goal and two assists. Looked lively.

Eddie Nketiah 9 | Star man

A dream night for the striker, who just loves scoring in the Carabao Cup. Was in the right place at the right time for all his goals - a poacher’s hat-trick.

Folarin Balogun 6

Had a few bright moments in the first-half and could’ve scored, but he wasted two good chances. Looks like he needs a loan move in January.

Substitutions

Granit Xhaka (Balogun 56’) 6

A solid 30 minutes or so from the midfielder. Added some control to the game for Arsenal.

Gabriel (White 73’) N/A

Gabriel Martinelli (Odegaard 73’) N/A

Patino (Emile Smith Rowe 80’) 7

Off the bench for his debut and it was a dream moment as he got on the scoresheet.

Subs not used: Ramsdale, Tierney, Partey, Saka, Lacazette
