Arsenal could be ready to rival West Ham United in the battle to sign Wolfsburg defender Maxence Lacroix, according to reports.

It has been a busy start to the summer transfer window for Arsenal. They have already added Fabio Vieira, Marquinhos, Matt Turner and Gabriel Jesus to their squad. However, they are still looking at areas to strengthen.

After just missing out on the top four last season, minor tweaks to their squad could help them get back in Champions League territory this time around. But it will not be easy.

With European football back at the Emirates Stadium – even if not of the Champions League variety yet – it will be important for Arsenal to ensure strength in depth in all areas. With that in mind, they are considering bringing another defender to the club.

One of their main targets under consideration has been Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez. However, Manchester United are also in the hunt for the Argentina international. Therefore, Arsenal are having to keep their options open.

They already have reasonable balance at the back; left-footed Gabriel Magalhaes was a regular starter alongside right-sider Benjamin White last season.

But behind them, there was only Rob Holding for depth. A return for William Saliba after a loan spell at Marseille should boost their options, but it remains to be seen if the Frenchman will get the gametime he wants if he is reintegrated.

Therefore, Media Foot are not ruling out that Saliba could be sacrificed. In turn, Arsenal could focus on his compatriot, Lacroix.

The French outlet verifies claims that West Ham are looking at Lacroix. However, he is also appearing on Arsenal’s radar.

Under contract with Wolfsburg until 2025, it may not be too easy to prise the 22-year-old away from the Bundesliga club. But if Arsenal have noted his potential, they may make a move.

Lacroix, like White, Holding and Saliba, is right-footed. He made 36 appearances across all competitions for Wolfsburg last season, including six in the Champions League.

Maxence Lacroix interest comes within difficult dilemma for Arsenal

It is clear that Arsenal do need another centre-back this summer. It could be Saliba to step into the void and show why Arsenal invested in him in the first place.

But after racking up more than 50 appearances for Marseille last season, he is unlikely to want to be a rotation player. It leads to the question of whether he could usurp Gabriel or White in the pecking order.

If he does, the next question would be whether either would be content with a fringe role themselves. It seems Arsenal may be planning in case one defender moves on.

They have done well to focus on other priorities first. But they are also doing the right thing to keep their options open in case they need to replenish the ranks at the back.

Adding a player with Lacroix’s potential, in that event, could be a shrewd move if the price is right.
