According to reports, Newcastle United have held ‘preliminary talks’ with Everton star Dominic Calvert-Lewin amid reports linking him with Arsenal.

It was revealed earlier this week that Calvert-Lewin is a ‘priority’ for the Magpies ahead of this summer.

The Englishman performed brilliantly last season as he scored 21 goals in 39 appearances for Everton across all competitions.

Calvert-Lewin made a bright start to this campaign but he has been impacted by injuries this term. He has only played 14 times.

Football Insider are reporting that Newcastle have held ‘preliminary talks’ with Calvert-Lewin over a transfer.

The Magpies are attempting to ‘lure’ him to the north east. Though it is stated that the player’s ‘preference’ is to sign for Arsenal.

The Gunners are in need of at least one new striker this summer. Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette are both out of contract in June.

Elsewhere, Marseille boss Jorge Sampaoli has admitted he his hopeful the Ligue 1 side will be able to keep hold of William Saliba past the summer.

Saliba joined Arsenal from Saint Etienne back in 2019, joining for a fee of around £27million, but he is yet to make a first team appearances for the club.

His season long loan spell at Marseille is his third temporary spell away from the club in as many seasons, following time with former club Saint Etienne and fellow Ligue 1 side Nice.

“He’s a top player at his position,” said Sampaoli (quotes via talkSPORT).

“We were lucky to get him on loan, it wasn’t simple. He’s great at marking, but good bringing the ball out too.

“He’s a future great of French football, he’s very good at starting plays.

“William’s progress is linked to his development this season and the maturity he now has and his playing time.

“He is now consistent, he’s grown up as a player.

“In relation to his situation at the club, I hope that there is a possibility for us to retain a player like him, who knows the team.

“But I don’t know if it depends on OM, William or Arsenal, I don’t know the possibilities in this case.”
