Arsenal ‘prepare bid’ for next Thierry Henry as Arteta looks to derail ambitious Tottenham plans
Arsenal have reportedly ramped up their interest in Montpellier striker Elye Wahi, who is also being chased by Tottenham Hotspur.
The 20-year-old has established himself as one of the best young attackers in Ligue 1 this term. As a result, he has caught the attention of several top European clubs.
Wahi has even been compared with a young Thierry Henry by some pundits. So, it will be interesting to see if the Gunners bring him in this summer.
Mikel Arteta has overseen a fantastic campaign at the Emirates this season. Indeed, Arsenal came close to winning their first Premier League title since 2004 – finishing just five points behind Manchester City.
As a result, the manager is set to be rewarded with significant funds to spend in the transfer window. Big-name players such as West Ham United’s Declan Rice have been heavily linked with Arsenal, for example.
However, as well as bolstering his midfield, Arteta is also keen in bringing in some new attackers. Now, according to French outlet Foot Mercato, he is considering a move for Wahi.
They claim that Arsenal are ‘readying a bid’ for the France international, after being wowed by his form for Montpellier.
This season, Wahi made 32 Ligue 1 appearances, scoring 17 goals in the process. This puts him behind eighth in the scoring charts for the division.
A quick, powerful striker, the youngster has proved to be a real handful for opposition defenders recently.
Wahi also became the joint-youngest player in Ligue 1 history to scored 10+ goals in a single season. Indeed, he joins the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele in achieving the feat – surpassing Henry and Karim Benzema.
As per Foot Mercato’s report, Montpellier will demand a fee in the region of £25m for the striker this summer.
But, as previously reported by Football365, Tottenham also hold a firm interest in Wahi. So, we could potentially see a bidding war take place between the London rivals in the coming months.
The only question, however, is whether Arsenal need to sign Wahi at all, due to the fact they already have a successful Ligue 1 forward among their ranks.
Folarin Balogun has spent the season on loan with Reims. There, he has scored an impressive 20 league goals – three more than Wahi.
Therefore, surely Balogun could do just as good a job as Wahi for Arsenal, and wouldn’t cost them a penny. Although, the 21-year-old has been linked with a permanent departure from the Emirates recently.
Nevertheless, with Arsenal reportedly ‘readying’ a bid for Wahi, the Montpellier striker is definitely a name to watch in the upcoming transfer window.
