Arsenal's anger at Leandro Trossard's dismissal against Manchester City may no longer be vindicated. In the late stages of the first half, the Belgium international was shown a second yellow card for delaying the restart after picking up his first caution earlier in the clash for a cynical foul.

The Gunners were ahead at the time and looked as though they had successfully nullified City until John Stones scored a scrappy late equaliser. Mikel Arteta, given Declan Rice was sent off for a similar offence earlier in the season, was understandably furious at full time.

"I prefer not to comment," he began. "I've seen it and it's that obvious, so I'll leave it to you guys. I was already in big trouble trying to solve what happened on the pitch. It's not my problem to solve what happens off the pitch." Upon being asked about Jeremy Doku not being penalised for a similar action, he said: That's what I'm saying.

"It's that obvious that it's not necessary to comment on it. It's the second time. I'm expecting 100 Premier League games to be, 10 against 11 or nine vs 10 this season. Let's see." Following this, every incident of a ball being kicked away has been under the microscope.

In an under-21s defeat at home to Liverpool, Harvey Davies was sent off for the visitors for delaying the restart. William Saliba was also cautioned for preventing Tottenham restarting the action during the North London Derby, and now Michael Oliver, the same official who sent off Trossard, has continued his strict stance on kicking the ball away.

For Southampton's 3-1 win over Bournemouth, Oliver was in charge and dished out seven yellow cards, with one of those going to Marcus Tavernier. Following a foul near Southampton's goal, Tavernier struck the ball towards Aaron Ramsdale and was booked, with Oliver deeming he had delayed the restart.

Consistency is often what Premier League fans complain there is a lack of within referees; however, in this case, Oliver has showcased he will not allow kicking the ball away to go unpunished. Despite that, an incident involving Wilfred Ndidi from Saturday's victory has emerged, which shows him marginally kicking the ball away after Bukayo Saka was fouled.
