Arsenal have been handed a major Youssouf Fofana transfer update with the AS Monaco midfielder one option to replace Thomas Partey. After four years at Emirates Stadium, the Ghana international is expected to depart with the search on for Mikel Arteta and Edu to find his replacement.

As has reported in the lead up to the summer window, signing a midfielder is a priority for Arsenal. With that in mind, the likes of Martin Zubimendi, Amadou Onana, Mikel Merino, Bruno Guimareas and Fofana have all been linked to joining the Gunners.

Deals being agreed for either Zubimendi or Guimaraes look very unlikely, with both players appearing happy at Real Sociedad and Newcastle, respectively. However, Onana leaving Everton is a real possibility while both Fofana and Merino have just entered the final 12 months of their contracts.

Arteta is an admirer of Merino's talent and physicality with the 28-year-old capturing headlines earlier this month following his winning goal for Spain against Germany at Euro 2024. Fofana meanwhile, spoke openly about his future ahead of representing France at the summer tournament.

“We haven’t yet spoken about it with the sporting director," he said when asked about his future at Monaco. "He will allow me to finish the season so that there aren’t too many things in my head, and if I then go to the Euros with the France national team, we will speak about it upon my return. We haven’t dwelt on it.”

“Qualification for the Champions League could be important. As I said, we haven’t dwelt on it. We’ll see what happens when we come back for pre-season.” With France now out of the European championships, Fofana's future can be decided and it looks as though a huge call has already been made.

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the 25-year-old has agreed personal terms with AC Milan. Talks have now started between Milan and Monaco over a fee with Fofana making a move to San Siro his priority over interest from several Premier League clubs.

With that update in mind, Arsenal may have to look elsewhere for their potential Partey replacement, though Arteta and Edu could attempt to hijack his planned move to Italy.
