Arsenal on red alert as PSG plot ambitious move for indispensable star who Mikel Arteta rates highly
Arsenal have been made aware of PSG’s interest in one of their star men who played all 38 games of the 2022-23 Premier League season.
The Gunners have had an impressive season on the whole. While they did fall short in the title race, they have made great strides forward in the last 12 months.
Mikel Arteta has built the foundations of a solid side. Arsenal also boast the youngest squad in the Premier League and so there is still plenty of time for this side to develop.
While things do seem to be on the up, Arteta will be wary of losing some of his key men this summer. PSG in particular have been eyeing up some of their stars of late.
It recently transpired that the French champions were keeping tabs on William Saliba. Along with looking at the French defender, PSG are also plotting a move for his defensive partner.
According to Football Transfers, the French side are also weighing up a move for Gabriel Magalhaes. The Brazilian defender has been a crucial first-team member under Arteta.
Having started in all 38 Premier League games this season, Arteta will be determined to keep the Brazilian defender at the club.
The 25-year-old racked up 3,411 minutes in the league, which was only second to Aaron Ramsdale from this campaign.
Arsenal were at their defensive best with Gabriel starting alongside Saliba at the back. With Arteta keen on keeping both players at the club, PSG would have to cough up a huge transfer fee to tempt the Gunners to sell.
Arsenal hold all of the cards
In the case of Gabriel, Arsenal hold all of the cards. The Brazilian defender signed a new long-term contract with the club in October last year.
Unlike Saliba, who is only contracted until 2024, Arsenal are in a better position to fend off interest in Gabriel. Arteta clearly rates the 25-year-old highly.
“Gabi has shown huge qualities since he joined us,” Arteta told the club website upon Gabriel signing a new deal. “He is a young player with a great work ethic and his consistent strong performances have been hugely important to us over the past two seasons.
“Working with Gabi every day is a pleasure, he has formed strong relationships with everyone at the club and we’re so pleased that he has committed to us on a long-term contract.”
Arsenal themselves are currently focused on signing a new holding midfielder or two. West Ham’s Declan Rice remains to be a priority signing this summer.
Despite Bayern Munich entering the race for the English midfielder, Arsenal are still in the driving seat.
The Gunners are expected to be in for a busy summer, but in the case of outgoings Arteta will be looking to keep hold of his key men. This especially applies to Gabriel and the reported interest from PSG.
