Arsenal have been told that former Manchester United academy star Angel Gomes would make a 'superb' acquisition for the Gunners.

The 24-year-old left Old Trafford in 2020 on a free transfer to Lille after negotiations over a new contract could not lead to an agreement. Since then, he spent a year on loan with Boavista in Portugal before returning to France and forcing his way into the conversation as one of the exciting midfield talents in Europe.

After a stellar career for the England youth teams, which included winning the Under-17s World Cup in 2017 and the Under-21s European Championships in 2023, Gomes finally made his debut for the senior team in 2024 against the Republic of Ireland. The midfielder has impressed in his subsequent two displays for the Three Lions, and speculation has increased about his future with a number of suitors said to be interested.

Gomes' contract at Lille runs until the end of the current season, meaning he would be available on a free transfer next summer. For a player proving himself in the England senior team, it's certainly not an opportunity which comes up regularly for clubs to consider.

Gomes has seemed to dovetail well with current Arsenal star Declan Rice during his games with the England team - particularly the two wins over Finland, leading to questions over whether the Gunners could make a move. And one former Arsenal star thinks it's a move that would suit the Gunners perfectly.

"I think Angel Gomes would fit in at Arsenal superbly," Dixon told plejmo.com. "His qualities are clear to see, he's a very good link-up player and we've seen that he can play alongside Declan Rice.

"He's got a lot of potential and although there will be plenty of clubs looking at him, I could see him at Arsenal next season."
