Arsenal show the ‘most concrete’ interest as they make €40m offer for long-term Man Utd target
Arsenal are showing interest in bringing Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic to the Premier League in the summer transfer window, according to reports.
The Gunners spent much of the January transfer window trying to strengthen their midfield with two bids for Brighton’s Moises Caicedo turned down.
With Caicedo proving impossible to land in the winter, Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu eventually settled on bringing in experienced midfielder Jorginho from Chelsea.
But, with Thomas Partey quite injury prone and Albert Sambi Lokonga seemingly not ready for the Arsenal first-team, the Gunners are likely to go back into the transfer market in the summer for another midfielder.
One name that is coming up quite frequently is that of Milinkovic-Savic with the 28-year-old having another good season in Serie A for Lazio.
The Serbia international has scored four goals and provided eight assists in 21 appearances this season and continues to attract interest from a number of clubs.
Manchester United have long been linked with the midfielder but in recent times it has been Arsenal emerging as a frontrunner for his signature.
Italian website Calciomercato claims that Premier League sides, including Arsenal, have ‘manifested the most concrete intentions’ and his agent Mateja Kezman has now ‘collected offers of around €40m’ for Milinkovic-Savic from the Gunners, West Ham and Newcastle.
The report adds that a ‘fiery summer is expected’ at the Serie A side with Lazio knowing a contract renewal is unlikely as Milinkovic-Savic’s contract expires in June 2024.
Arsenal were also linked with Milinkovic-Savic back in the summer and Paul Merson reckons clubs a “missing a trick” by not forking out the money to land the Serbian.
Merson wrote in his Daily Star column last July: “Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is the player I would go for. I think Milinkovic-Savic is a lovely player. A really top-drawer player.
“The way he played for Lazio last season I personally think he is the best midfield player in Italy. I know Manchester United have been linked with him in the past, but why there isn’t a queue of clubs lining up to buy the Serbian, I do not know.
“I think a lot of clubs are missing a trick.”
Arsenal are doing brilliantly in the Premier League with the Gunners holding a two-point lead over second-placed Manchester City after beating Leicester City 1-0 at the weekend.
Asked about winning twice on the road since losing to Manchester City earlier this month, Arteta replied after the match against the Foxes: “It was really important because it creates more belief in the players, around the club and externally.
“But I had the belief the players could do it. It was coming back to some details and basics that get games away from us that we made much more. The last two games – especially today – we have done it much more.
“Against teams like Everton, the way we conceded the goal and some set-pieces was very avoidable.
“Sometimes the wave is created very far from the beach. Then it’s too late to avoid what is going to happen. We had to improve on those things and today we’ve done that really well.
“(We conceded) some sloppy goals with individual errors which are part of football.
“But the fact that we are not conceding goals and giving away chances is really important if you want to be constantly winning matches.”
