Sahin, 23, made a name for himself as Borussia Dortmund captured the Bungesliga title in Germany in 2010-11, which led to Jose Mourinho bringing him to the Bernabeu on a six-year deal that summer.
But the Turkish international has been unable to establish himself in a similar fashion in La Liga in the 11 appearances he was afforded by the Spanish champions, and has been allowed to seek a new club.
Liverpool appeared to be in pole position to acquire the services of Sahin on loan with a view to a permanent move, but reports are now strongly suggesting it is the London club who are on the verge of replacing their outgoing midfielder Alex Song, set to sign for Real's rivals Barcelona.
