Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla has suffered a setback in his recovery from the ankle injury he sustained in October and does not expect to play again this season.

The Spain international underwent surgery on his Achilles tendon after limping out of the Champions League win over Ludogorets.

He has since undergone several operations in a bid to cure the problem.

Arsenal’s medical team are confident Cazorla will make a full recovery but that process will take considerably longer than anticipated.

It is believed he is already targeting a return to action in pre-season ahead of the 2017-18 campaign.

It comes after Wenger said in January he hoped the 32-year-old would feature again this term for the club.

It is possible Cazorla has played his last game under manager Arsene Wenger with the Frenchman yet to decide whether he will stay at the club beyond his current contract, which expires in June.
