Liverpool may need to sign a new goalkeeper this summer, and has been advised a shock move for Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale might be a smart move for both parties.

Liverpool is likely to make several forays into the transfer market this summer, but goalkeepers aren't high on the agenda for new sporting director Richard Hughes and coach Arne Slot. Despite speculation liking him to the Saudi Pro League, Alisson Becker is still the club's number one and isn't likely to be sold this summer.

A problem may arise with the club's number two in Caoimhin Kelleher. The Irishman has played second fiddle to Alisson since graduating into the first team squad in 2019, and there is a recognition that Kelleher is too good to be a number two at this stage of his career.

Now 25, Kelleher got a taste of regular first team football for Liverpool last season, when Alisson was ruled out for several months with an injury. Kelleher made 10 league starts, and finished the season with 26 in all competitions.

Former Leeds and Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes that should Kelleher opt to leave Anfield this summer, Liverpool should look at making a move for Arsenal stopper Aaron Ramsdale. Ramsdale lost his place in the starting XI to David Raya last season, making just six appearances in the Premier League.

“If Kelleher leaves Liverpool, there’s an opportunity for him to go and be a number one with Alisson.

“Look at the amount of games Kelleher has played this year, compared to Ramsdale, there’s an opportunity there to have more game time and prove himself.

“Aaron Ramsdale has got to go somewhere and he’s got to play. He’s been harshly treated at Arsenal. I think the way [Mikel] Arteta handled the situation was wrong.”

Ramsdale has been at Arsenal since 2021, and had been the undisputed number one in his first two seasons at the club. Yet it remains to be seen whether he could take the number one spot from Alisson, considering the Brazilian is showing no signs of slowing down.

In a press conference while away with the Republic of Ireland, Kelleher stated now the aim is to play regular first team football: "I'm at that stage in my career where I need to make that next step and play week in and week out so I think that's all it was, really, a reflection on the season and my ambitions going forward."

Liverpool.com says: Ramsdale finds himself number two at Arsenal, but if he was to join Liverpool he would find himself in the same situation. Alisson is the number one at Anfield and that's not going to change, which is why Kelleher could also move on.
