Arsenal storm into £22m midfielder transfer battle as enquiry tees up concrete chance of signing
Arsenal have made an enquiry about an unsettled Juventus midfielder and are ready to reach the next stage of their transfer pursuit, according to an Italian report.
Mikel Arteta has already been able to welcome one new player to his Arsenal squad this January. Leandro Trossard recently completed a transfer from fellow Premier League side Brighton to give them another attacking option.
Winter signing number two should soon be over the line. Arsenal will be taking Jakub Kiwior from Serie A side Spezia to strengthen their defence with an eye to the future.
Now, details are emerging that suggest Arsenal’s next signing after Kiwior could come from Serie A as well.
Recently, there were suggestions that Arsenal are on alert to potential opportunities to strengthen their midfield for the second half of the season. And with that in mind, they have seemingly settled on a new target.
According to La Gazzetta Dello Sport, Arsenal have made an enquiry with the agents of Juventus midfielder, Weston McKennie.
The USA international has been looking for a way out of Juventus this month. He has long been linked with a Premier League transfer, with Tottenham Hotspur regularly mentioned as admirers.
But perhaps their north London rivals could beat them to the deal. Indeed, the report claims Arsenal could turn their interest into something concrete after their checks with the player’s representatives.
McKennie might be on the market in the coming days for a fee between €20million (£17.6m) and €25m (£22m).
Hence, there is an opportunity for Arsenal to sign him. He would add to a midfield that already consists of Granit Xhaka, Thomas Partey, Mohamed Elneny and Albert Sambi Lokonga, as well as the more forward-thinking likes of Martin Odegaard and Emile Smith Rowe.
Weston McKennie might be next Arsenal addition
McKennie is also capable of playing in different positions, such as wing-back. Therefore, he might have a chance of breaking into Arteta’s table-topping side in a few ways.
The 24-year-old has never played in the Premier League before, but there has been a confidence for a while that he could adapt to English football, as seen by the type of clubs linked with him.
From 21 appearances this season, McKennie has scored three goals. Across his whole Juventus career, he has managed 13 goals from 96 games.
Soon, he could be due for a change of scenery. By potentially moving to Arsenal, he could team up with his USMNT colleague, Matt Turner.
The move might be one to keep an eye on in the final few days of the transfer window. Juventus are seemingly open to a deal and Arsenal could be the ones to take advantage.
Competition remains from Borussia Dortmund, who could take the former Schalke man back to the Bundesliga.
However, Arsenal are now a club to be taken seriously in the race for McKennie’s signature.
