Arsenal have had a £76million bid for Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen rejected by Napoli, according to reports.

Arsenal have been heavily linked with a number of strikers in recent months and Osimhen appears to be near the top of their list.

Liverpool play every game possible – but fewer than top five busiest Prem teams

The Gunners current forward options Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are both set to depart at the end of the season due to their expiring contracts, meaning reinforcements will be needed.

Lille’s Jonathan David, Benfica’s Darwin Nunez, Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Alexander Isak of Real Sociedad are thought to be off interest to Arsenal but Osimhen is on their list.

Calcio Mercato are now reporting that Arsenal bid £76 million for the Nigerian attacker, however, the Serie A side turned down the approach as they are holding out for around £92m.

Arsenal’s current transfer record is the £72m signing of Nicolas Pepe from Lille in 2019.

Lille actually used the money they received from the Pepe deal to bring in Osimhen but he would only remain in Ligue 1 for one season before heading to Italy.

Meanwhile, Arsenal legend David Seaman has insisted that Mikel Arteta is still the right man for the job but did admit they must start challenging soon.

“I still feel that Arteta’s the right man,” said Seaman on his podcast.

“I see what he does in training, his coaching methods and the intensity, passion and quality that he’s got. The demands he makes on the players are really high and for me, the team is getting better.

“They need be top five again [by Christmas next season], they need to be going for Champions League.

“It’s going to be difficult for them to be challenging for the Premier League because of the gap from Liverpool and Man City.

“They need to be challenging, if they’re not, no matter who is the manager at Arsenal, there would be questions asked.

“They need to be in a position to go for Europe. Europe should be the main aim every season, at least. If we’re not top five then there will be a lot of questions asked.”
