Arsenal switch would be ‘perfect’ for out-of-favour Real Madrid star who will be available for free
Mikel Arteta will already have one eye on the summer transfer window and Arsenal have been tipped to sign an out-of-favour Real Madrid star.
The Gunners currently sit top of the Premier League table and hold a five-point lead over Manchester City. Arteta will be keen on further strengthening his side while they are on top.
Arsenal signed the likes of Leandro Trossard and Jorginho in January who have proven to be savvy signings so far. Ahead of the summer, they are seemingly interested in another creative player.
Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio has been linked with the Gunners for quite some time now. With his contract set to expire in the summer, it could be the perfect time for Arsenal to make a move.
Estadio Deportivo have claimed that Arsenal ‘would be perfect for him’ as he weighs up his next move. Having won 15 trophies in Spain, Asensio would add vital experience to the squad.
The Spanish playmaker has featured in 18 league matches this season, although 11 of those came from the bench. He has averaged just 36 minutes per appearance this season.
During that time he has produced four goals and three assists in La Liga. As he is capable of playing on the right or through the middle, he could be of use to a side like Arsenal.
Martin Odegaard found that his opportunities were limited at Real Madrid and he hasn’t looked back since moving to North London.
Asensio is keen to remain in contention for the Spanish national side as his dwindling game time at Real Madrid has left him behind others in the pecking order.
Does Arsenal move make sense?
With Asensio after more game time, it is worth noting that he would not be a guaranteed starter at Arsenal. Bukayo Saka has already got the role on the right-hand side nailed down.
Asensio’s versatility would mean that he is capable of playing in a number of roles though. He has even played as a number nine on occasions for both Spain and Real Madrid.
A new deal at Real Madrid isn’t off the table just yet for Asensio, but the clock is ticking on a renewal. Carlo Ancelotti remained tight tipped when he recently discussed his contract.
“He looks good to me, so I don’t know if he stays or not,” the manager told Sky Sports.
“Maybe he does, maybe he doesn’t. I don’t care much. We have some important challenges this season. The most important thing is that he contributes like last year.
“Let him continue as he is doing now. Then the club makes the most appropriate decision in the end.”
Along with Arsenal, Asensio does have other admirers from the Premier League. Tottenham and Manchester United have each been linked with the playmaker in recent months.
At his best, Asensio is capable of unlocking any defence in Europe, but he will have to choose his next club wisely to guarantee he gets a regular spot in the starting 11.
