Arsenal face competition from a Champions League club in the race for midfielder Houssem Aouar, who will wait before making a decision on his future.

Lyon director Juninho confirmed last week that Mikel Arteta is an admirer of the player, 22,  and the Ligue 1 club are braced for bids in the final two weeks of the summer transfer window.

It is understood the player is aware of a club playing in Europe’s elite competition who are preparing a late offer for the France Under-21 international.

Lyon want £54 million for Aouar following his three seasons playing regularly in their first team.

He has played in the Champions League already, although Arsenal competing in the Europa League should not rule them out of the running. They have signed Gabriel Magalhaes this summer despite competition and have also agreed a new contract with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Arteta has looked at Aouar and Atlético Madrid’s Thomas Partey as long-term targets to strengthen his midfield.

Willian has arrived on a free transfer to add firepower, while fellow Brazilian Gabriel has played in the opening two wins of the season. Runar Alex Runarsson has arrived this week as back-up to first-choice goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

While Dani Ceballos has extended his loan from Real Madrid for another season, Arteta would welcome another midfielder to help his club compete on multiple fronts, having secured a Europa place with the FA Cup triumph at the end last season.

Lyon are set to receive offers for their players after reaching the Champions League semi-finals, which included a victory against Manchester City in the last eight during the knockout stages in Lisbon.

Former Manchester United winger Memphis Depay is wanted by his former international manager Ronald Koeman at Barcelona. Personal terms will not be a problem when clubs agree a fee but Depay, 26, is reluctant to agitate for a move or request a transfer. He has been appointed captain at Groupama Stadium and takes his responsibilities seriously.
