Alan Shearer believes Arsenal are two players short of overtaking Manchester City to win the Premier League - and urged Edu to bolster their ranks in the summer transfer window.

Gunners fans are still reeling from falling just short of winning their first title since 2004 for the second consecutive year. Mikel Arteta's side earned five more points than the previous season but still found themselves two points behind Pep Guardiola's side when the campaign came to an end.

Jurrien Timber, Declan Rice and Kai Havertz joined the club last summer and immediately bolstered the team at both ends of the pitch. But Shearer and Micah Richards believe they may need a similar transfer outlay if they are to surpass the relentless Citizens.

“We got it spot on,” Shearer said on the Rest is Football podcast, boasting about his prediction that Arsenal would finish second at the start of the season.

“‘Pushing City all the way’ that’s what they did, until the last game of the season. They’ve improved, Declan Rice improved them, and he’s had a good season.

"I think big things are to come from Arsenal if they can get two top-quality players to add to what they have already got, I think they could do it next season."

The Gunners have been linked with Newcastle United duo Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak. Both players are understood to be valued at around £100million by Eddie Howe's side.

It's also understood they may have a free run on RB Leipzig's precocious forward Benjamin Sesko, who has also been linked with Chelsea. In January, there were also reports claiming they had made contact with Napoli forward Victor Osimhen.

Ex-Manchester City star Richards also thinks the Gunners should be playing close attention to the attacking and midfield areas. “I think it’s a massive improvement from last season," the Premier League winner said.

"I just go back to that Villa game, where Arsenal had Villa at home and Arteta chose to go with Havertz in the midfield area, instead of the false nine, which worked so well for them. They could’ve gone with a Jorginho or a Partey. Emery on the day, tactically got it spot on. But I think they’ll win it next year."
