Arsenal, Tottenham move for game-changing playmaker ‘dreaming’ of switch hits snag over ‘astronomical’ deal claims
Arsenal and Tottenham could both miss out on the signing of a dynamic Bundesliga playmaker after his club lined up an “astronomical” deal to keep the Premier League target.
The north London rivals are both on the hunt for fresh attacking talent this summer, with the Gunners looking to build on the talented group of forwards Mikel Arteta already has in place while Spurs are crying out for a No.10 to provide them with more of a creative edge.
And both clubs are keen on landing Borussia Dortmund and Germany star Julian Brandt.
The 26-year-old’s current contract with the German side runs out in the summer of 2024. And with his deal running down, that has led to speculation that a significant offer could see Dortmund look to cash in.
Indeed, a figure in the region of just £25million is being mooted for the impressive Brandt.
However, German outlet DW claims that Dortmund will offer the playmaker a huge salary to extend his deal and stay at Signal Iduna Park.
Brandt has been in sensational form this season, scoring nine goals and adding five assists in 32 games in all competitions.
Despite the fact that Dortmund are desperate to keep their man, Bundesliga reporter Christian Falk has given his verdict on the likelihood of that happening.
He told Caught Offside: He’s [Brandt] been dreaming for years of making it in the Premier League.
“There has always been contact with Arsenal and we’ve heard that the club is interested again.
“His contract expires in 2024, so there has to be a decision, especially now that he’s found more consistency this term in comparison to recent years at Dortmund.
“Now, it could be the time to make the next step and follow [Kai] Havertz to England.
“He hasn’t got one club in his head at the moment, but Arsenal are of course more interested than ever before.”
Versatile Brandt could play big role in north London
Brandt’s versatility makes him an attractive proposition to both Arsenal and Tottenham.
The attacker can play on either flank or as a traditional No.10 and you could argue that he would have a better chance of slotting in at Spurs, given their lack of creative forward players.
The big issue there is that, at this stage, there and still massive question marks over who will be manager beyond the summer.
Antonio Conte looks increasingly likely to head back to Italy, with the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Luis Enrique, Roberto de Zerbi and Thomas Frank all linked to take his place.
With that being the case, the stability that Arsenal will be able to offer could end up becoming Brandt’s best route.
The Gunners are also guaranteed Champions League football next season due to their outstanding campaign thus far.
The decision is now the player’s and whether he wants to stay in Germany or fulfill that ‘dream’.
