Ligue 1 outfit Rennes are reportedly ‘trying everything’ to sign Arsenal forward Alexandre Lacazette on a free transfer this summer.

The north London side forked out a then club-record fee of £46.5million to snap up the Frenchman from Lyon in 2017. However, his stay in the capital has not always been a successful one.

The 31-year-old has scored 71 goals in 206 appearances for the Gunners in all competitions. However, he did not start any of the club’s final eight Premier League fixtures of the season as they were trying to secure a Champions League spot.

That target ultimately failed as north London rivals Tottenham secured fourth spot on the final day of the campaign.

And with Lacazette’s contract running out at the end of June, he is fully expected to leave.

A return home is very much on the cards, with Le10 Sport (via Sport Witness) stating that Rennes have Lacazette ‘right at the top of the pile’ of targets this summer.

However, the report adds the potential transfer is a ‘complex affair’ due to Lacazette’s high wage demands. But despite that, Rennes director Florian Maurice ‘dreams of making Lacazette come to Brittany’.

Lacazette’s projected exit still means Arsenal are on the lookout for a new No.9.

Having allowed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to leave on a free in January, Mikel Arteta is fully aware of his need to strengthen his frontline.

Nketiah U-turn still leaves Arsenal short

There is good news on Eddie Nketiah, however, with the young striker set for a U-turn over his future.

The England Under-21 attacker is another player out of contract from July 1. However, he appears to have changed his mind about an exit and is expected to sign a new deal.

Nketiah was Arsenal’s man striking option in the closing stages of the season.

The 23-year-old ended up scoring 10 goals in 27 appearances in all competitions. That included five in his last seven games as Arteta’s men just missed out on those Champions League spots.

But even if Nketiah does stay, Arsenal still need another top attacker in order to one better than this season.
