Arsenal technical director Edu will not be sulking for long over their failure to sign Mykhaylo Mudryk – and David Ornstein has suggested they already have a No 1 alternative in mind before the January window closes.

The Gunners sit proudly on top of the Premier League with an eight-point buffer to Manchester City. Mikel Arteta’s side recorded a deserved 2-0 win at Tottenhem on the same weekend that reigning champions Manchester City lost 2-1 at Manchester United. And with a huge tussle against Erik ten Hag’s side to come, this week looks a pivotal one in the title race.

Arsenal know that, despite their advantage, they can ill afford too many slip-ups. Pep Guardiola’s side at past masters at winning the title, having won it four times in the previous five seasons.

In order to further their chances, Arteta wants to sign two players: a new midfielder and a winger.

The wide forward situation looked to have been resolved with a deal seemingly closing in for Mudryk. After tracking the Shakhtar star for most of the season, talks had intensified over recent days. And having reached an agreement, Arsenal were hoping to officially sign him up this week.

However, their prospects were ruined as Chelsea came in with the ultimate transfer hijack. Ian Wright is far from amused, expressing his bitterness towards Todd Boehly’s side.

But with two weeks left in the window, Edu can ill afford to feel sorry for himself for long.

And Monday’s Transfer Gossip suggests he has two targets in mind to fill Arsenal’s need for a winger.

One target being mentioned is Barcelona star Raphinha. However, being just a matter of months into his spell there, it seems highly unlikely Barcelona will cash in already.

Arsenal ready to move for Leandro Trossard

However, a perhaps more realistic target is Brighton winger Leandro Trossard.

The Belgian has fallen out with manager Roberto De Zerbi and is pushing to leave the AMEX. With 18 months left on his deal, his sale could now be arranged with Brighton gaining nothing by keeping an unhappy star.

The 28-year-old has scored seven times and assisted three more from 16 appearances this season. So he’s already a proven Premier League talent that could prove a useful acquisition for Arsenal.

Now trusted reporter David Ornstein of The Athletic has run the rule over Arsenal links to Trossard.

And while not fully committing yet to an Arsenal approach, he has told NBC Sports that he is ‘one to watch’.

Ornstein said: “You have also seen Leandro Trossard of Brighton and Hove Albion linked. He very publicly has fallen out of favour at the club. So that might be one to watch, but I don’t know about active movements as things stand.”

Should Edu push for Trossard, there looks to be a deal there to be done.

The Seagulls will not want to keep an unhappy player and will know his market value is at its peak right now.

De Zerbi’s side hammered Liverpool 3-0 on Saturday and showed no signs of missing the Belgian. The winger is currently back in his native Brussels and training on his own to maintain his fitness.

To that end, a deal would make sense for all parties. Quite what Brighton will be asking remains to be seen. However, any deal will undoubtedly come in for far less than the £80m package they were reporedly ready to pay for Mudryk.
