Arsenal have submitted a £20million bid for rising Palmeiras midfield star Danilo, whose release clause is much higher according to a report.
The Gunners have added Porto youngster Fabio Vieira to their ranks this summer in a £34million deal. Boss Mikel Arteta was subsequently happy with his options, although there have been murmurings of another signing.
And talk of a second midfield addition has ramped up following the news of an injury to Mohamed Elneny.
The Egypt international will be out for a while with a hamstring problem, forcing Arsenal back into the transfer market.
But, with Thursday’s transfer deadline creeping ever closer, time is running out.
According to Goal Brasil, Arsenal have once again gone after Palmeiras star Danilo. The north London club were keen on the 21-year-old earlier this year only for a deal not to materialise.
Nevertheless, their approach this time is much more concrete, with technical director Edu Gaspar – Brazilian himself – leading the chase.
Crucially, though, the £20million bid will not suffice. Palmeiras, recognising the talent they have on their hands, have set his release clause at £85.8million.
It remains unclear whether Arsenal will get any closer to Palmeiras’ valuation, but there is clearly a big shortfall.
Serie A champions AC Milan are also keen on Danilo but have yet to firm up their transfer interest unlike Arsenal.
Danilo has already shown potential
Danilo has starred this season with seven goals and three assists in all competitions for Palmeiras.
He has appeared in 21 of 24 league matches so far, making 20 starts and helping his side enjoy a seven-point lead at the Brazilian Serie A summit.
Meanwhile, he faced Chelsea at the Club World Cup after helping Palmeiras win the Copa Libertadores last November.
And this season, Danilo has netted two goals and assisted another to help Palmeiras reach the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores again. They lost 1-0 to Athletico Paranaense in their first leg on Wednesday.
As such, there is already a lot to get excited about with Danilo, whose ambition will be to play at the World Cup.
He made the bench for Brazil’s international friendly with Japan in June – his only foray into the senior national team so far.
Arsenal in for busy two days
Arsenal boss Arteta had revealed last week that his biggest priority was to sign a replacement for winger Nicolas Pepe.
However, he has now also been forced to revisit his plan for his midfield.
Arteta has created an exciting young team which has lots of potential for the future. He will therefore not want to ruin that with a last-minute signing who does work in his plan.
By the same token, Danilo has a lot of potential himself and could slot in alongside fellow countrymen Gabriel Magalhaes, Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus at the Emirates Stadium.
But spending £85million for him right at the end of the window may be a bad move.
Arteta has a fine balance to strike in the next couple of days and who Arsenal bring in – if anyone – will be a key story to watch.
