Arsenal 0-2 Chelsea FC LIVE! Lukaku, James goals decide Premier League derby - result, match stream, updates

Arsenal vs Chelsea - LIVE!

Romelu Lukaku sent Chelsea top of the Premier League table as the Blues sunk Arsenal 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium.

The Blues’ £98million signing from Inter Milan made an immediate impact following his return on a club-record fee, netting less than 15 minutes into the London derby.

Reece James teed up Lukaku’s opener then blasted home himself, capping a fine Chelsea move.

The Blues held firm after the break to ease to their second straight league win, having thumped Crystal Palace 3-0 last weekend.

While Chelsea moved top of the table, Arsenal slumped to 19th courtesy of their winless start to the new campaign.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta will come under immediate scrutiny, with the Chelsea loss coming hot on the heels of the 2-0 defeat by Brentford.

Life doesn’t get any easier for Arsenal, with champions Man City up next. As for Chelsea, they look capable of mounting a serious title challenge with Lukaku now leading the line.

Arsenal vs Chelsea highlights

That’s all, folks

21:54 , Tom Doyle

Right, that’s it for this evening.

It was a tough day for Arsenal, and given Man City are up next, there could be more pain in store before things get better. Still, the Gunners have plenty of young, talented players to build with for the new season, so fans will have to trust the process - but for how long can Mikel Arteta use that excuse? Time will tell.

As for Chelsea, they look scarily good. The defence is tight, the wing-backs are a constant threat, the midfield snaffles everything up, and in Romelu Lukaku, they now have a world-class No9 to bully defences into making mistakes. It looks like it could be a fine year for them, but as with Arsenal, we will see in the coming weeks and months.

We will be back bright and early tomorrow morning for more news, reaction and analysis - bye for now.

Arteta on Arsenal fans’ boos

21:28 , Tom Doyle

Arsenal were booed off at half-time and at the conclusion of the 2-0 loss, but Arteta praised the reaction of the crowd during the match.

“I see a lot of positives with the crowd and the team today,” he added.

“The way they supported the team right from the beginning. At the end I didn’t see any bad reaction with any of the players when players were getting subbed, I see a good reaction. But, that is my opinion.”

Arteta on ‘unprecedented’ situation

21:28 , Tom Doyle

Mikel Arteta told his Arsenal players to not feel sorry for themselves after they suffered a second consecutive defeat of the new campaign, with more players absent due to an outbreak of Covid-19 cases at the club.

He told Sky Sports: “It is one of the difficult moments you have to go in your playing career and managerial career because the circumstances are really difficult and probably unprecedented.

“You have to face them. Feeling sorry for yourself doesn’t help. You have to face the challenge, face the criticism because it will come.

“We are Arsenal football club, we have to win every football match but we need to keep the togetherness. The spirit the team showed in the second half, losing 2-0 and knowing it is difficult to beat a team like them in this moment, we never gave up.”

Tuchel explains James injury

18:53 , Tom Doyle

There was concern that Reece James returned to play on after it looked like he may have been knocked out, but Tuchel confirms that was not the case.

“He was not at all unconscious and was worried he broke a tooth, that is why he was shocked.”

Tuchel on Lukaku’s teamwork

18:51 , Tom Doyle

Tuchel believes his partnership with the likes of Mount and Kai Havertz will only improve with more game time.

He added: “I didn’t expect too much. I wanted to be open to watch him and see his strengths and capability to adapt. To link up with Kai, Mason and him, this is what he did very good. The guys like to play with each other and from now on we can go into detail.”

Tuchel hails ‘smart, humble’ Lukaku

18:50 , Tom Doyle

Thomas Tuchel praised Lukaku for giving the team something different after he got off the mark in his second spell at the club.

“I am very happy with the way he has integrated already. He is a very smart guy, likes to be in the group and is a very democratic leader because he talks to everybody and is very friendly, humble,” the German told Sky Sports.

“He gives something to our game which we did not have so much like to protect balls and to play very direct up front, to the last line. You can not start better than with a goal. He almost scored a second. He assisted some chances, half-chances so a good start.”

Full-time! Arsenal 0-2 Chelsea

18:20 , Tom Doyle

That’s it - Chelsea take the three points today.

It’s a deserved win for the Blues, with Lukaku showing why they will be title challengers this term.

Things can only get better for Arsenal - but with Man City up next, they might have to get worse before then.

18:18 , Tom Doyle

Three minutes of injury time.

Lukaku named man of the match

18:18 , Tom Doyle

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has just awarded man of the match to Romelu Lukaku - a deserved choice for a great all-round display.

“Not too difficult today, it is going to Lukaku. A complete centre-forward performance, from start to finish.

“Not just his goal, but his all-round play has been the difference between the two teams.”

18:17 , Tom Doyle

Lukaku shows more brilliant hold-up play, spinning after playing a ball to Alonso and immediately looking for the cross - but he can only glance a header away to the right.

18:16 , Tom Doyle

89 mins: Time for Chelsea’s last change, with Werner on for Havertz- he gets a solid reception from the travelling Chelsea fans.

18:15 , Tom Doyle

The cameras cut to Mikel Arteta, who is sat down staring at the floor - it’s not been a great day for him.

18:15 , Tom Doyle

Ziyech drives forward on the break and fancies a goal himself, opting to shoot with options to the left and right.

His shot deflects over for a corner.

18:14 , Tom Doyle

86 mins: Sub Ziyech - on for Mount - is involved in a good Chelsea move with Lukaku, and Havertz is through - but Leno saves low with his legs. That really should have been three.

James Robson | Chelsea correspondent

18:09 , Tom Doyle

The service to Lukaku could have been better today. Chelsea haven’t made the most of his runs. That wasn’t the case on that occasion - and but for a brilliant save he would have his second goal of the day.

Ziyech is about to come on. Perhaps he can provide more for the striker in the closing moments - or perhaps Lukaku will be rested for the final 10 minutes.

18:08 , Tom Doyle

80 mins: Leno spills a shot and Mount is almost onto it, but can’t quite get there.

Leno denies Lukaku!

18:05 , Tom Doyle

It should be 3-0 here as Mount crosses for Lukaku to power a header at goal, but Leno makes a brilliant save, tipping the ball onto the bar with a strong left hand. Stunning stop.

18:02 , Tom Doyle

An Arsenal corner comes in. It’s cleared, but pinged back in and headed across by Aubameyang... but Holding can’t quite get there as Mendy smothers!

18:01 , Tom Doyle

72 mins: James is down and the Chelsea physios race on. The Chelsea wing-back appeared to suffer a head injury in a collision, but is thankfully back up on his feet.

17:58 , Tom Doyle

71 mins: It only gets worse for Arsenal... N’Golo Kante is on to see this game out, replacing Kovacic.

17:57 , Tom Doyle

Alonso tees up James in the centre, but his curling effort is deflected over for a corner.

17:56 , Tom Doyle

68 mins: Smith Rowe receives a low cross from the right, takes a touch... but his toe-poked effort is brilliantly blocked by Azpilicueta - top defending.

17:55 , Tom Doyle

66 mins: Booking for Lokonga, who drags down Lukaku - a great run from the Chelsea striker.

17:53 , Tom Doyle

65 mins: Bad news for Arsenal as Tierney is down and needs treatment.

Off he goes, with summer signing Tavares on.

17:52 , Tom Doyle

Fantastic goalkeeping from Mendy as he races off his line to beat Aubameyang to a lovely through-ball which had cut Chelsea’s defence wide open.

Top positioning from the Chelsea No1.

17:50 , Tom Doyle

Lukaku very nearly has his second as he receives the ball in the Arsenal box, but can’t quite find the space and is blocked out. Frantic defending from the Gunners.

17:50 , Tom Doyle

Martinelli dribbles on the counter. He loses the ball, but wins it back quickly with a poke to Aubameyang.

He firs straight at Mendy from an angle, but it gets the home crowd back onside.

17:48 , Tom Doyle

Change for Arsenal, and Saka makes way for Aubameyang. The captain is back after his bout of Covid-19, and gets a great reception.

James Robson | Chelsea correspondent

17:48 , Tom Doyle

Chelsea want to be careful not to let this game drift. Arsenal have had their moments to suggest they could yet get back into it. If that chance from Holding goes the right side of the post then the Emirates would be bouncing.

17:47 , Tom Doyle

A bit of afters here between Havertz and Holding.

Havertz gets a talking-to from the referee.

Chance for Arsenal!

17:47 , Tom Doyle

What a chance for Arsenal!

Mari heads a corner back across goal, and Rob Holding digs out a header from six yards - but it flashes wide of the left-hand post!

That had to go in...

17:45 , Tom Doyle

Chelsea have a chance of a third, but Mount drags wide from 20 yards out - that was a decent chance.

Watch: James goal, Chelsea 2-0

17:43 , Tom Doyle

Here is the moment Reece James doubled the lead for Chelsea...

17:42 , Tom Doyle

54 mins: Half-chance for Lukaku as he swings at an Azpilicueta cross, and Arsenal make a hash of the clearance for a corner.

Save by Mendy!

17:39 , Tom Doyle

Saka drives one from range, and his shot deflects high towards Mendy, who tips it over for a corner. Better from Arsenal now.

17:38 , Tom Doyle

50 mins: Smith Rowe twists and appears to be caught by Jorginho, but the referee says no contact. The home crowd are riled up, and this is some decent pressure as Rudiger heads a cross clear for a corner.

17:37 , Tom Doyle

49 mins: Lukaku again receives the ball with his back to goal - he twists, the ball falls kindly, but he’s blocked out.

Arsenal get the ball clear, and Tierney is racing around like Carlos Tevez used to do.

That gets the Arsenal crowd going, at least, and that’s what the players need.

17:34 , Tom Doyle

Lukaku is almost through in the box after some neat footwork, but is just blocked out.

Early pressure for Arsenal to soak up here.

Kick-off!

17:33 , Tom Doyle

Right, we’re back underway at the Emirates. Plenty of work for Arsenal to do.

As for Chelsea, this is ideal for them: they’re great at the back, and love to break at speed.

Half-time | Arsenal 0-2 Chelsea

17:18 , Tom Doyle

Well, I say it’s all gone quiet, but the half-time whistle is greeted with a chorus of boos by the home crowd.

Arsenal are hampered by injuries and Covid-19, but they’re just not good enough. Chelsea look very, very good.

17:17 , Tom Doyle

The rain is pelting down at the Emirates now, and that will make things tasty for Chelsea on the counter after the break.

It’s all gone a bit quiet for Arsenal.

17:15 , Tom Doyle

44 mins: Holding picks up a deserved booking for an absolutely needless lunge on Alonso in the corner here.

He’s way off the ground, and probably would have seen red had he caught anything other than Alonso’s foot.

It’s a wild challenge which hints at Arsenal’s current desperation.

17:14 , Tom Doyle

43 mins: Corner to Arsenal - Pepe whips it, it falls to Cedric on the opposite side who crosses, the ball is headed back across goal, but they can’t get somebody on the end of it.

17:13 , Tom Doyle

42 mins: Arsenal are pushing for a goal before the interval to offer some hope of a second-half fightback, but the danger is they’re leaving space at the back for Chelsea to counter.

17:12 , Tom Doyle

VAR is having a check - it depends on whether Saka clipped James, or the other way round.

Following a review, the original decision stands. Arsenal will feel hard done-by, but that is technically how those decisions are supposed to go this season, with fewer penalties given for minimal contact.

17:10 , Tom Doyle

Ooh - Saka goes down in the Chelsea penalty area, but referee Paul Tierney says it’s no spot-kick after a coming-together with James.

17:09 , Tom Doyle

Almost a third for Chelsea as Mount clips in a neat cross from the left of the box - Havertz just flicks the ball with his head, and it flies over Lukaku for a goal kick.

17:09 , Tom Doyle

So, for all Arsenal’s spirit, Chelsea’s ruthless quality is showing.

They’re still battling though - Smith Rowe is almost onto a flick-on, but can’t get a touch on the ball from eight yards out.

GOAL! Arsenal 0-2 Chelsea | Reece James, 34 mins

17:05 , Tom Doyle

It’s two for Chelsea!

What was I just saying about James and FPL points?

Great team move as Chelsea flow forward - Lukaku is taken out, but Arsenal are too focused on him and ignore James on the overlap again. Mount picks him out, and James fires high past Leno into the net.

Devastating finish, and Arsenal are in serious trouble now.

17:04 , Tom Doyle

Lukaku receives the ball inside his own half, and Mari scythes him down from behind.

That’s rash, needless, and he’s booked. You’d be surprised to see Mari survive the game on a yellow card.

17:03 , Tom Doyle

32 mins: Credit to the Arsenal fans, they’re roaring on their team as Smith Rowe drives into space and receives a return ball inside the box - but he’s tackled well.

17:01 , Tom Doyle

James has the freedom of the right flank today - he’s in more space, and cuts a low cross into the box... but it’s behind Lukaku.

If you haven’t got James and Lukaku in your FPL teams for next week, that could be a mistake - this looks a great partnership.

James Robson | Chelsea correspondent

16:59 , Tom Doyle

Lukaku has spent the opening 27 minutes directing Chelsea from the front. He is constantly talking to the midfielders and wide men, telling them exactly where he wants the ball.

Had the service been better on occasion, he might have more than just the one goal so far.

16:57 , Tom Doyle

Lukaku receives the ball with his back to goal again and turns Mari, but the defender gets a block in.

16:55 , Tom Doyle

25 mins: Mendy is never convincing with his feet, but is sharp enough here with Martinelli snapping at his heels in the box.

16:53 , Tom Doyle

James is in acres of space again on the right - Lukaku is on for another tap-in, but James makes the wrong choice, pulling the ball back for Mount - and his shot is blocked for a corner.

Pass to Lukaku there, and it’s 2-0 - and possibly game over.

Watch: Lukaku goal, Chelsea 1-0

16:52 , Tom Doyle

Here is Romelu Lukaku’s first goal back in a Chelsea shirt...

16:51 , Tom Doyle

Space opens up for Bukayo Saka on the left - he cuts outside, but slips at the vital moment.

That was a great opening, and a real waste.

16:50 , Tom Doyle

19 mins: Another bad moment for Mari as he tries to beat Lukaku for strength on halfway and loses easily - fortunately for Arsenal, the counter-attack is put out for a corner.

Off the resulting delivery, Lukaku eventually sends one wide - but the flag has gone up.

16:50 , Tom Doyle

Pablo Mari has to settle himself. He lost the initial duel with Lukaku before being bundled over as the Chelsea striker brushed him off for the goal, and he’s now played a long ball out of play.

James Robson | Chelsea correspondent

16:48 , Tom Doyle

Really well worked by Chelsea. Lukaku’s strength in holding the ball up and then his movement in getting into the box to finish it off. In that moment alone we saw exactly what Tuchel wanted from a striker. The first of many for Lukaku one suspects.

It was so simple and yet so effective.

Simon Collings | Arsenal correspondent

16:47 , Tom Doyle

A good goal from Chelsea, but not one Cedric will want to see again. He was a yard behind the rest of the defence and played Reece James onside. Arsenal’s issues at right-back highlighted there.

16:47 , Tom Doyle

If you needed a reason why Chelsea paid almost £100m for Lukaku, then that was it. It was a goal of devastating power, poise, finesse and penalty box poaching. So simple, yet unstoppable.

GOAL! Arsenal 0-1 Chelsea | Romelu Lukaku, 14 mins

16:45 , Tom Doyle

Lukaku scores on his return to Chelsea!

The £97.5m man starts and finishes the move, holding up the ball really well and laying it off to Jorginho who floats a lovely ball over to the right flank for James.

He’s onside, and crosses low for the onrusing Lukaku to tap home into an empty net!

Simon Collings | Arsenal correspondent

16:43 , Tom Doyle

“A surprisingly solid start from Arsenal, who have been the better of the two sides. Lokonga has settled well in midfield, while Pepe and Saka look bright out wide.”

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

16:43 , Tom Doyle

Arsenal and Chelsea fans are both in agreement over one thing today - the crowd stand and chant: “Stand up if you hate Tottenham!”

The enemy of my enemy, and all that...

16:41 , Tom Doyle

Arsenal have been the better of the two teams, but you just get the sense that if Chelsea can ride out this optimism among the Gunners’ players and fans, they can then start to control the ball and pin the hosts back.

16:40 , Tom Doyle

Pepe floats in the corner, it’s headed back, but the whistle had already gone for a foul on a Chelsea player.

16:39 , Tom Doyle

Tierney is getting forward well, and a dangerous cross is clipped out by Alonso for a corner.

James Robson | Chelsea correspondent

16:39 , Tom Doyle

There have been a couple of occasions where Chelsea have looked to get Lukaku in. His movement has been good, but they haven’t found the quality yet to make the most of it.

16:38 , Tom Doyle

8 mins: Lukaku makes a run, but the clipped ball over the top is too far for him to get to.

16:37 , Tom Doyle

6 mins: With Arsenal short of options today, they’ll have to beat Chelsea with plenty of heart today - and so far, they’re showing it. Time will tell whether that’s enough with the quality the visitors have, but it’s a strong start.

16:34 , Tom Doyle

Xhaka is sitting up now, but with the new concussion protocols, Arsenal will want to make sure he’s completely OK.

He’s up and walking off the turf now. Let’s see if he can continue.

16:33 , Tom Doyle

2 mins: Xhaka blocks a James shot with his head, and he certainly felt that one.

He’s lying on the turf and needs some treatment.

16:31 , Tom Doyle

Good start from Arsenal as the Gunners press a long ball, and a shot is fired at goal - but Mendy is down to save.

16:31 , Tom Doyle

It’s a great atmosphere in north London, with the stadium drenched in the afternoon sunshine.

Chelsea are heavy favourites, but let’s hope it’s a contest.

Kick-off!

16:30 , Tom Doyle

We are underway at the Emirates!

Arteta: We have to use criticism to learn

16:12 , Tom Doyle

Arteta sounded frustrated by the lack of options at his disposal, with Covid-19 hitting his squad badly.

He sounded resigned to a potential defeat today, but wants effort from his players - and has also called for criticism to be tempered by the circumstances.

"What I want is... more energy, motivation, passion. In a challenge there is always an opportunity. They know what we are trying to build. We are not going to get any help so we have to do it ourselves.

"Unity, togetherness, the spirit in the building - they can’t break it. They can try, They can criticise, we have to use criticism to learn. On Sunday you have to be a little bit fair with the circumstances."

Arteta, Arsenal can’t wait for full Emirates

16:10 , Tom Doyle

Mikel Arteta has been speaking to Sky ahead of the game, and he's looking forward to a full house at the Emirates.

"It's been a long time without a full crowd here. I can’t wait. The players can't wait to play in front of a full crowd."

16:00 , Alex Young

So, Romelu Lukaku makes his second debut for Chelsea as one of three changes for their short trip to face Arsenal.

The Belgium striker rejoined the Blues from Inter Milan last week and came in for Timo Werner.

Kai Havertz and Reece James were recalled in place of Trevoh Chalobah and Christian Pulisic, who recently tested positive for Covid.

Arsenal have had a number of players missing following positive Covid tests but captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang returned to the bench.

Defender Ben White missed out, the latest casualty of coronavirus, with Rob Holding replacing him at the back.

Bukayo Saka made his first start of the campaign as the Gunners also made three alterations from their opening-day defeat at Brentford with Cedric Soares the other to come in for Mikel Arteta's men.

Chelsea team news

Christian Pulisic will miss out for Chelsea after testing positive for Covid-19. The USA forward is fully vaccinated and has not experienced any symptoms, but is in self-isolation.

Midfielders Hakim Ziyech (shoulder) and N’Golo Kante (ankle) could return, while £98million recruit Romelu Lukaku may make his second Chelsea debut.

Chelsea provisional squad: Mendy, Azpilicueta, Chalobah, Christensen, Rudiger, Alonso, Jorginho, Kovacic, Mount, Werner, Havertz, Arrizabalaga, Silva, Zouma, Hudson-Odoi, Chilwell, James, Ziyech, Kante, Lukaku.

Arsenal team news

15:01 , Malik Ouzia

Arsenal could welcome back captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for the London derby. Aubameyang missed the 2-0 loss at Brentford after returning a positive Covid-19 test, as did fellow striker Alexandre Lacazette, goalkeeper Alex Runarsson and winger Willian.

Willian could also return while Lacazette and Runarsson are still missing, as are defender Gabriel Magalhaes (knee), striker Eddie Nketiah and midfielder Thomas Partey (both ankle), while new signing Martin Odegaard is not available as he awaits a visa. But new goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale could be involved after signing from Sheffield United on Friday.

Meanwhile, £50m summer signing Ben White is also set to miss out due to illness.

Arsenal provisional squad: Leno, Ramsdale, Okonkwo, Bellerin, Chambers, Soares, Mari, Holding, White, Tierney, Tavares, Kolasinac, Maitland-Niles, Lokonga, Elneny, Xhaka, Smith Rowe, Saka, Nelson, Pepe, Willian, Aubameyang, Balogun, Martinelli.

Standard Sport prediction

14:54 , Malik Ouzia

On paper, Chelsea are firm favourites for this derby - but given Arsenal won both meetings last season, it is unwise to back a comprehensive victory.

Much will depend on whether Aubemayeng and Lacazette are available, as Arsenal looked short of attacking ideas against Brentford in their absence.

Still, Chelsea will fancy their chances of a win with Lukaku likely to play some part.
