Arsenal vs Everton LIVE!

Mikel Arteta’s Gunners kick off their tour of the United States with a friendly against Everton in Baltimore as both clubs look to show their mettle ahead of the new Premier League campaign - and put on a show for the locals.

A goal-fest victory over Nurnberg began Arsenal’s pre-season in style as Gabriel Jesus scored twice in a comeback victory. Fans both at home and across the pond will be keen to see how the Brazilian fares alongside fellow new signings Fabio Vieira, Matt Turner and Marquinhos.

Tonight’s match is Everton’s first game of note since they narrowly avoided relegation and entered an uncertain summer under Frank Lampard. Shorn of Richarlison, the Toffees have so far only recruited James Tarkowski from Burnley with money tight and expectations low for another potentially difficult season at Goodison Park. Follow all the action via Standard Sport’s live blog!

Full time!

02:04 , Marc Mayo

A bit of a scuffle to finish off here as Tarkowski upsets Pepe before launching a hefty tackle on Lokonga to take a yellow card - and that’s the game!

02:01 , Marc Mayo

90 mins: Gordon launches the free-kick into Lokonga in the wall and Arsenal rebuff the second ball in.

Up the other end, Pepe fires in a shot at Crellin as three minutes goes up on the board.

01:59 , Marc Mayo

89 mins: A comfortable period on the ball for Arsenal ends with slack play from Holding and Everton come forward, winning a foul in the middle as Mari is booked for downing Iwobi.

01:54 , Marc Mayo

84 mins: Bellerin on a curious run into the box and the Spaniard seems to be a bit confused as to what to do with it, after throwing out a loose stepover.

Eventually, he bundles into an Everton defender and concedes a foul.

01:50 , Marc Mayo

80 mins: Gbamin goes into the book for felling Nketiah, the ball into the box seeing Tarkowski calmly shrug off Mari to let the ball go into touch.

Muted penalty appeals fall on deaf ears.

01:48 , Marc Mayo

77 mins: Once again, Crellin has to come off his line to deal with a wayward backpass from his defence.

Nketiah is looking eager and beats his man with a nice turn onto his right foot, taking aim from 20 yards and earning a sturdy block to clear the ball.

01:45 , Marc Mayo

75 mins: A fresh impetus about Arsenal now before Mari picks out a hopeful long ball all the way through to the goalkeeper.

Elneny then almost finds Pepe with a fine through ball that draws out the Toffees shot-stopper to hoof clear.

01:41 , Marc Mayo

70 mins: We’ll get underway with a fresh set of Arsenal players on the pitch. Nelson, Mari and Walters are among them.

01:39 , Marc Mayo

68 mins: Time for the water break of the half and Arteta is straight into a huddle to dish out some forthright instructions.

01:37 , Marc Mayo

66 mins: Teenage full-back Mills, son of ex-England man Danny, has been a breath of fresh air for Everton in the early moments of the half and picks out a nice cross into Rondon that gets crowded out.

Arsenal could do with reasserting their authority on this one, with many of the players now on the pitch in need of impressing their boss.

01:33 , Marc Mayo

63 mins: A lot more control and movement from Everton in this half, can they produce a final ball to truly test Arsenal at the back?

01:30 , Marc Mayo

59 mins: Lovely block from Tarkowski with a late slide on Martinelli as the young forward ran at goal and prepared to shoot on his left foot.

Martinelli is back on his feet for the corner and drifts his cross into touch.

01:27 , Marc Mayo

56 mins: Elneny finds Maitland-Niles nicely before the midfielder lets a long-range effort go, but Pickford is untroubled as it flies just a touch off-target.

01:23 , Marc Mayo

52 mins: The newly bleach-blond Gordon lines up a short corner for Everton before Mills launches on a fine run down the right.

Arsenal reject the cross before Iwobi sends a shot from the edge of the box high and wide.

01:20 , Marc Mayo

50 mins: Nketiah, Maitland-Niles, Pepe, Holding, Bellerin and Elneny in the game for Arsenal now to form a three-man backline.

01:18 , Marc Mayo

46 mins: A potshot from 45 yards has Turner tracking back to scramble the ball away as both teams settle in after a raft of changes.

01:15 , Marc Mayo

The second-half is underway in Baltimore!

01:11 , Marc Mayo

Plenty to ponder for Frank Lampard as Everton looked incapable of keeping the ball or forming an attack that wasn’t a long hoof forward in that half.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has barely been in the game.

01:05 , Marc Mayo

A very satisfying half for the Gunners, who came out on the front foot and hit the post before a quickfire double from Gabriel Jesus and Saka.

Plenty for Arsenal to celebrate in that half

Sunday 17 July 2022 00:58 , Marc Mayo

The Gunners well on top at the break.

Sunday 17 July 2022 00:57 , Marc Mayo

45 mins: Odegaard whips the free-kick well over as two minutes of stoppage time begin.

Sunday 17 July 2022 00:56 , Marc Mayo

44 mins: A booking for Godfrey after arriving for a lunge on Jesus outside the D a fair few split seconds behind the Brazilian.

Jesus looks hurt but is on his feet to push on.

Sunday 17 July 2022 00:53 , Marc Mayo

42 mins: Saliba plays back a rather inaccurate backpass to Turner, forcing the American into a fleet-footed reply before the defender picks up the return and holds off Dele nicely to clear.

A bit of Everton possession as the break approaches.

Sunday 17 July 2022 00:50 , Marc Mayo

39 mins: The Gooners in the building give Dele a none-too-polite reception as he finally gets on the ball for a bit of a run.

Arsenal are quickly back on the front foot and Tavares flashes a shot wide from distance.

GGGOOOOOAAAALLLL!!! Arsenal 2-0 Everton | Bukayo Saka

Sunday 17 July 2022 00:46 , Marc Mayo

35 mins: Jesus finds space down the middle yet Martinelli can’t control his clip into the middle... but Saka is there to bury it!

Maybe offside but no VAR tonight to check.

GGOOOOAAALLLL!!! Arsenal 1-0 Everton | Gabriel Jesus

Sunday 17 July 2022 00:43 , Marc Mayo

32 mins: Arsenal finish off a short burst of pressure!

Saka looks like he’s hurt his hand, nothing serious though, after a run is shut down in the box by Mina’s last-ditch intervention. Pickford then gives the ball away to Martinelli for a dart into the box which Mina again has to shut down.

Pickford flaps at the corner and the ball reaches Jesus... who scores into the empty net!

Sunday 17 July 2022 00:41 , Marc Mayo

30 mins: Arsenal winning the possession battle 63 to 37 per cent at this stage as Saka is sought out down the right, but the offside flag goes up as he picks out Jesus in the box.

Sunday 17 July 2022 00:37 , Marc Mayo

27 mins: A minor kerfuffle between Xhaka, Gabriel and Doucoure after a bit of argy bargy in the middle of the park. Plenty of fight on show today.

Sunday 17 July 2022 00:33 , Marc Mayo

22 mins: SAVE!

Nkounkou breaks down Everton’s left in a swift move that leads to the left-back firing a shot at Turner, winning a corner.

Mina flicks the ball in wide after beating Gabriel in the air and, with that, we will have a cooling break.

Sunday 17 July 2022 00:31 , Marc Mayo

20 mins: Calvert-Lewin has a first sniff from a good diagonal that Cedric snuffs out for a corner.

The ball goes short and Nkounkou makes a hash of it, before the Toffees sneak the ball back into the box and Dele tumbles under pressure from Turner...

No penalty! Nervy for the Gunners but the right call.

Sunday 17 July 2022 00:25 , Marc Mayo

16 mins: POST!

Xhaka rises high from the corner and nods the ball right off the far-post - and Jesus very nearly gets a good connection to turn home the rebound!

Sunday 17 July 2022 00:25 , Marc Mayo

15 mins: CHANCE!

Jesus should score after a terrible pass across the 18-yard line from Holgate gifts the Brazilian the ball. He takes aim but Pickford palms his snapshot wide.

Sunday 17 July 2022 00:24 , Marc Mayo

14 mins: Minor penalty calls from Jesus and the Gooners behind the goal as he hits the deck in challenging for an aerial duel with Patterson. Nothing doing.

Sunday 17 July 2022 00:23 , Marc Mayo

12 mins: A few pretty heavy fouls flying in early, for a pre-season game at least.

They suit the very competitive tempo backed up by quite a feisty atmosphere inside the ground - chanting is at a premium but rowdy fan reactions are certainly not.

Both managers will be pleased to see their players tested in this level of game, even if it is a little imprecise so far.

Sunday 17 July 2022 00:19 , Marc Mayo

9 mins: Saka swings in the first corner of the game and Saliba gets up well in the crowd but his header goalwards is easily hoicked clear.

Sunday 17 July 2022 00:17 , Marc Mayo

6 mins: A fairly straightforward 5-3-2 formation from Everton tonight, Dele having a bit of freedom to join Calvert-Lewin and Gray up top.

Arsenal in a 4-2-3-1 as expected, Odegaard behind the striker Jesus.

Sunday 17 July 2022 00:13 , Marc Mayo

3 mins: Jesus with an early charge on Mina sends his fellow South American tumbling.

A very energetic start from the Gunners, perhaps aware not all of their fans will make it to full-time overnight!

Martinelli is the next to surge forward with a rush down the left reaching the byline before a mass of bodies force the ball clear.

Sunday 17 July 2022 00:11 , Marc Mayo

1 min: How’s that for a front-foot start by Arsenal?

An immediate bombardment of balls into the box after a move down the left and a scramble leads to Saka firing a shot from close-range, well blocked by Nkounkou.

Sunday 17 July 2022 00:10 , Marc Mayo

Right then, after some extended formalities and a warm embrace between the managers... the game can begin!

Jesus gets the ball rolling, both teams in their home kit.

Sunday 17 July 2022 00:05 , Marc Mayo

The teams are out and we look to finally be within a few moments of the game getting underway.

Get to know tonight’s venue

Saturday 16 July 2022 23:31 , Marc Mayo

Located in downtown Baltimore on the east coast of the United States, M&T Bank Stadium boasts a capacity of 70,745.

Ground was broken on the stadium in 1996 to herald the new NFL team Baltimore Ravens being created, after the local Colts side moved to Indianapolis.

Previous visitors to the stadium include Liverpool and Chelsea for pre-season friendlies plus Metallica, Billy Joel and One Direction. Not on the same night, of course...

How does that look, Arsenal fans?

Saturday 16 July 2022 23:25 , Marc Mayo

Saturday 16 July 2022 23:21 , Marc Mayo

A hardly revolutionary line-up from Frank Lampard, as expected with Everton having made only one signing so far this summer.

James Tarkowski is not in the starting XI however with Niels Nkounkou at left-back after returning from a loan gig at Standard Liege.

It looks like a 4-3-3 with Dominic Calvert-Lewin flanked by Dele Alli and Demarai Gray up top.

Saturday 16 July 2022 23:15 , Marc Mayo

In all, Mikel Arteta makes ten changes to his starting line-up for the win in Nurnberg - only Matt Turner keeping his place in goal.

William Saliba, Nuno Tavares, Thomas Partey, Granit Xhaka, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard all start having sat out that game.

On the bench, Rob Holding, Reiss Nelson (remember him?), Lucas Torreira (remember him?!) return to the squad.

Saturday 16 July 2022 23:09 , Marc Mayo

William Saliba and Gabriel Jesus get the starting nod from Mikel Arteta for tonight’s friendly.

It will be the French defender’s first match since moving on loan to Marseille for a rather solid spell in Ligue 1, by all accounts. He’s back to win a first-team spot in north London.

Reuell Walters, the 17-year-old defender, is again in the squad and starts on the bench.

Arteta confirms Saliba role

Saturday 16 July 2022 22:45 , Marc Mayo

Mikel Arteta has discussed what role William Saliba will play in the coming campaign.

“We cannot guarantee first-team football to anybody in this team - you can ask that question to anybody,” he said in Baltimore.

“What we guarantee is that the ones we really see and think are going to take us to the next level, they're going to be playing a lot of minutes.”

Lampard open about Pickford criticism

Saturday 16 July 2022 22:32 , Marc Mayo

Frank Lampard has defended Jordan Pickford ahead of the Everton goalkeeper’s latest season as the club’s, and England’s No1.

He said: “I think the reason he takes tons of s*** is because he’s a brilliant footballer. If you play at the highest level and particularly if you’re England’s number one, there’s no other position as a footballer in England that has the scrutiny of England’s number one.

“The minute you get the jersey, someone wants to take it off you or say why it should be taken off you. That’s some real pressure that no one will understand other than Jordan and England goalkeepers.

“In terms of how it is to work with Jordan, I was lucky enough to play with fantastic goalkeepers, Petr Cech mainly, but what I would say is when you coach and when you manage, it’s such a funny world because you’re a genius if you win and you’re useless if you lose. Sometimes you’re just reliant on brilliant players doing their job.”

Saliba vows to fight for first-team spot

Saturday 16 July 2022 22:15 , Marc Mayo

William Saliba is determined to fight for his place in the Arsenal first team as he looks to finally make his mark in north London.

The centre-back signed for the Gunners three years ago but since then has been back in France for various loan spells, bringing into doubt whether he had a long-term future at Arsenal under Mikel Arteta.

“We spoke a little bit on Monday and will speak more,” Saliba told the club’s official website.

“My plan is to fight and work with the team, win as much as possible, and grow more. It feels good to be back and starting pre-season.

“I’m so excited to continue training and playing in the friendly games. It’s important to be here with the fans, as well as my teammates.”

Clean slate for Arsenal players, says Arteta

Saturday 16 July 2022 21:45 , Marc Mayo

Mikel Arteta has promised a completely fresh approach to his Arsenal squad for the new campaign.

“The message is: this is a different season and everybody has a clean start,” said the Spaniard ahead of tonight’s game.

“Show us what you can do on the pitch, how you’re going to behave with your team-mates, are you going to make the car faster - yes or no?

“If you do you have a chance to be here… for me to send a different message to the group was to be very, very inconsistent with what we demand.

“So they’re in the group, or they’re not. They’re part of us, they’re contracted to the club, we want the best out of them and at the moment they’re with us so we’re going to treat them like this.”

Evening Standard score prediction

Saturday 16 July 2022 21:24 , Marc Mayo

Again, it’s important not to be put too much value on pre-season friendlies, but Arsenal look well-placed to win.

They battered Frank Lampard’s side on the final day of the season and have since welcomed a £45m striker into the club.

Arsenal to win 2-1.

Saturday 16 July 2022 21:18 , Marc Mayo

For Everton, it is a big pre-season for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, a player Arsenal have previously scouted.

The England forward was blighted by injury last time out and could still play himself into Gareth Southgate’s thinking ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

Early team news

Saturday 16 July 2022 21:12 , Marc Mayo

Mikel Arteta has welcomed back a number of internationals who missed the win in Germany, so it seems reasonable to assume the bulk of them will get a run out in at least some capacity.

Jesus will likely feature and it will be interesting to see how heavily involved William Saliba is.

Expected to be part of the first-team set-up this season, the Frenchman is yet to play a senior game for the club.
