Arsenal tonight play their first Premier League fixture following the European Super League fiasco as they host Everton.

The Gunners have apologised to fans after signing up to the controversial breakaway competition alongside the rest of the top-flight’s so-called ‘Big Six’ on Sunday, with all of those clubs quickly backing out after a furious backlash.

Arsenal are braced for protests from increasingly disgruntled supporters against the ownership of Stan Kroenke before Friday’s fixture.

On the pitch, Mikel Arteta’s team remain drifting in ninth and nine points behind the top four with only six games left to play after Eddie Nketiah struck late to rescue a draw at home against relegation-threatened Fulham last weekend, with their season - now the Super League plans have seemingly collapsed - hinging on the Europa League, where they face former manager Unai Emery and Villarreal in the semi-finals after overcoming Slavia Prague.

Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton, meanwhile, sit just one place and three points above their next opponents - having played one game less - after a costly five-match winless run seemingly put paid to any hopes of staying in the crowded race for Champions League qualification.

Real Madrid loanee Martin Odegaard will be assessed ahead of Friday’s game after returning to light training following an ankle issue.

Arsenal vs Everton prediction

Mid-table Arsenal’s latest underwhelming display in a torrid season against Fulham only added to the sense of shock that they would be included in any sort of Super League in their current state.

Thankfully for Arteta and Co, they are coming up against an Everton team that are winless in their last six across all competitions and have faltered badly in their own push for Europe amid plenty of injury strife.

A low-scoring draw seems a distinct possibility between two teams that are plagued by inconsistency, though it is worth noting that Everton, who struggle at Goodison Park, possess the Premier League’s fourth best away record, having won nine of their 15 matches on the road so far this term.

1-1 draw.
